BITTER MOON, A FILM BY ROMAN POLANSKI
Our base is a luxury cruiseship, but much of Bitter Moon – even most of it – is flashback: Oscar's giant self-narrated backstory, as queasy in its sexual rollings and pitchings as the voyage on which he's telling it.
Bitter Moon is about bodies and souls in hopeless, funny-tragic entanglement; it's a movie essay on folly, volatility, and the nasty things that happen to human beings when they exchange spiritual fluids.
Bitter Moon does not demand to be read as a Polanski fable.

 'Bitter Moon'
een as the bizarre, seat-of- the-pants endeavor it is, Roman Polanski's "Bitter Moon" is good for a howl or two.
"Moon," like most of his films, is about multiple levels of entrapment: Everyone seems to be enslaved by themselves and each other.
Above all, "Moon" is abundant with horseplay, as the Polish director rolls out his array of shock tactics and fl humor.

 Polanski's Bitter Moon
Bitter Moon employs a similar narrative method wherein one man is taken hostage by another man's tale of misery.
You wince at his desperate exit, yet realize it was scripted by his muse, the bitter moon in red who gave him the gun as a birthday present.
The soundtrack by Vangelis is excellent, is pure onomatopoeia with the ocean, the moon, the bitter spirit that pervades this story of poisoned love.

Foster on Film - Noir: Bitter Moon
Bitter Moon is a great big, twisted tale of love, hate, and death, that signifies far too little.
Polanski's had many troubling events in his life (look it up) and I could imagine he's developed a dark philosophy, but Bitter Moon is a cry for anti-depressants.
Bitter Moon uses sex to illuminate the futility of existence.

 All-Reviews.com Movie/Video Review: Bitter Moon
The author of this review admits that he haven't read the novel but the idea of BITTER MOON being a "simple love story" looks totally alien to him, at least if the 1992 screen version, directed by Roman Polanski, was faithful adaptation of the novel.
Nigel is shocked by this series of discoveries and starts to wonder what kind of perverse game Oscar plays with him, but in the same time he can't get enough of it, partially because he is getting more and more attracted to Mimi.
BITTER MOON is anything but "simple" love story, but it is a nevertheless a love story, and it proves that love stories can be effective even if the protagonists are dislikeable, and the events on the screen mostly revolting or depressing.

The returns are in from Europe and the coasts, and the critics have found Roman Polanski's "Bitter Moon" an embarrassment: It is too melodramatic, too contrived, too overwrought, too overacted.
What bothers some of the critics, I suspect, is the audacity which Polanski exhibits by casting his own wife, Emmanuelle Seigner, in the central role - as a voracious seductress with fl widow tendencies, whose amusement is to blind men in the headlights of her sexuality, and step on the gas.
But "Bitter Moon" is nothing if it is not audacious, Polanski is far beyond concern over matters of taste, and his wife at least never seems miscast in a role which would have stopped many another actress cold in her tracks.

In his 14 mostly overrated movies since that auspicious coming out, his attempts at seriousness and formula have been crashing bores rescued only by the fashion of his brand name, and his only shining moments reserved for the few playful escapades he has allowed himself (and Rosemary's Baby as the only complete success, at that).
Bitter Moon, as it is, is one of his better films, even if only in moments.
Bitter Moon stars Peter Coyote as Oscar, a decaying cripple enduring some painful karmic SandM for his callow participation in a kinky affair.

Slant Magazine - Film Review: Bitter Moon
Their affair, told in Oscar's subjective flashback, moves with sickening momentum from their meet-cute, passionate love affair, sexual obsession with each other, and the moment when they begin get so tired of each other that they swirl deeper and deeper into a cycle of betrayal, abuse, and torture.
The most transgressive aspect of Bitter Moon is how Polanski's presentation of the lurid material (widely derided by critics as being too misanthropic and extreme) is far more successful when dealing with the self-loathing, self-destructive Oscar than in trying to make Nigel's overblown indignation believable.
Whereas the hollowing-out of Rosemary Woodhouse as she begins to lose her notions of sanity was in many respects as much self-imposed as it was inflicted upon her by her egotistical husband, Mimi's devastation is unmistakably the work of Oscar's cunning and ruthless psychological demolition.
