Bitter Sweet was an operetta written by Noel Coward and first produced in 1929.
The relatively simple plot - set in 19th-Century Austria and concerning a young woman's elopement with her music teacher - is used as the hook for a series of excellent light-operatic numbers, many with surprisingly complex melodies strongly reminiscent of the best work of Gilbert and Sullivan.
The song title alludes to the gay playwright Oscar Wilde, who famously wore a green carnation himself.

As director Larry Marsh points out in his excellent notes, Bitter Sweet is part of the bridge between the classsic nineteenth century styles and what might be thought of today as the classic Broadway muscial.
Bitter Sweet recaptures the dramatic highlights of the turbulent life of Sarah Millick, a young London lady who elopes with her music teacher the night before her wedding to a stiff older gentleman.
Director Larry Marsh has clearly put much effort into Bitter Sweet, and although some of the same will be demanded of the audience by the vintage material, I found that in my case, the expenditure was richly rewarded.

BBC NEWS | Health | Same taste bud for 'bitter-sweet'
By studying rats they found two chemical messengers - one for sweet and one for bitter tastes - present in the same taste buds found at the back of the tongue.
This is the first time that the chemical for sweet taste, called neuropeptide Y (NPY) has been found in the tongue's taste buds.
CCK may tell neighbouring cells that are attached to the nerve fibres that a bitter taste is on the tongue, while NPY will tell them that the taste is sweet, they said.

Bitter or sweet? The same taste bud can tell the difference
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The tongue's ability to differentiate between sweet and bitter tastes may reside in the same taste bud cells, a new study reports.
Given the current findings, Herness thinks that CCK tells the brain that something bitter is on the tongue, while NPY sends a message that something sweet is being eaten.
The researchers would eventually like to figure how these work, too, but for now their next step is to apply bitter and sweet stimuli to taste bud cells that contain both NPY and CCK and see how each peptide reacts.
