Yes, it is, from the text of the article, it seems that the research isn't specifically about making beer not bitter, but the effect of conditions on how the hops flavor the beer.
Have your friend pour the beers in another room where you can't see him so you won't be able to tell which is which.
It's a decent light Bock beer (the regular Shiner-brand lager was better, but they don't brew it any more), but it's not as good as it used to be somehow.
