Coal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bituminous coal - a dense coal, usually fl, sometimes dark brown, often with well-defined bands of bright and dull material, used primarily as fuel in steam-electric power generation, with substantial quantities also used for heat and power applications in manufacturing and to make coke.
Coke is a solid carbonaceous residue derived from low-ash, low-sulfur bituminous coal from which the volatile constituents are driven off by baking in an oven without oxygen at temperatures as high as 1,000 °C (2,000 °F) so that the fixed carbon and residual ash are fused together.
Coke is used as a fuel and as a reducing agent in smelting iron ore in a blast furnace.

Olympus Microscopy Resource Center: Polarized Light Microscopy Gallery - Bituminous Coal
Bituminous coal is the most prevalent form of coal on Earth.
In the series of carbonaceous fuels that ranges from peat to anthracite, bituminous coal is of middle rank, containing intermediate amounts of fixed carbon, volatile material, and moisture in comparison with the other materials to which it is related.
Bituminous coal also exhibits a relatively high heat value, which along with its abundance, is responsible for its common use in a number of important practical applications.

Olympus Microscopy Resource Center: Polarized Light Microscopy Gallery - Bituminous Shale
Bituminous shale is an argillaceous shale that contains bitumen, a mixture of hydrocarbons that may be used as fuel, as a paving material, or in a number of other applications.
This type of shale is often found accompanying coal and, in fact, grades into bituminous coal when carbonaceous material is present in large amounts.
In the Kimmeridge Bay area of Dorset, England, for instance, the material was used as a fuel and as a material for craftsmen even in pre-Roman times, though the Romans were responsible for the first large-scale operations in the area.

 Separating Bituminous Sands
Karl Clark is strongly associated with the hot water separation of bituminous sands, and while he did not invent the procedure, he improved upon it by utilizing chemical reagents and fine-tuning the process, resulting in the cleanest bitumen achieved at that time.
Bituminous sand as a paving material was soon abandoned as it was uneconomical, and so Clark's focus shifted to cleaning the bitumen in order to process it.
With some minor adjustments, this method of separating bituminous sands was patented in 1929, though it would be decades of experimenting with new techniques in oil refinement before the oil sands yielded more valuable petroleum products.

Strain Energy of Bituminous Built Up Membranes: An Alternative to the Tensile Strength Criterion | Technical database ...
Bituminous membrane samples, fabricated from polyester fabric, polyester glass composite fabric, and single plies of APP- and SBS-modified bitumen, were tested in tension to determine their load-elongation properties and to measure their strain energy.
The results of the tensile tests of the new bituminous membranes indicated wide variability of load and elongation among the different types of materials.
As an alternative to the criterion that a bituminous built-up membrane have a tensile strength of 200 lbf/in, it was recommended that the strain energy should be a minimum of 3 lbf in/in., when tested at 0 F in the weaker direction.

In Illinois, the typical rehabilitation for a concrete pavement is full-depth patching of the distressed concrete, and overlaying the pavement with 3.25 inches of bituminous concrete.
When bituminous concrete overlays reach the end of their service lives, common distresses are reflective longitudinal and transverse cracking, reflective cracks from transverse joints and patches, and reflective D-cracking.
Once concrete pavements have deteriorated to the point where the performance of a standard bituminous concrete overlay is questionable, constructing an unbonded concrete overlay may be considered.
