  Bivalvia
The class Bivalvia are known as the bivalves because they typically have two-part shells, with the parts more or less symmetrical.
Bivalves appeared late in the Cambrian explosion and came to dominate over Brachiopods[?] during the Palaeozoic; indeed, by the End Permian extinction, bivalves were undergoing a huge radiation in numbers whilst brachiopods took a devastating hit, along with almost all other life (~95% species become extinct).
Although inevitable biases exist in the fossil record and our documentation thereof, bivalves essentially appear to be better adapted to aquatic life.

STEM GROUP BIVALVIA: WHERE TO BEGIN?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Ever since Laacaze-Duthiers (1857), scaphopods have been considered to be the living class of the Mollusca most closely related to the Bivalvia.
If this were true, then rostroconchs are either stem group scaphopods or stem group diasomes (Runnegar and Pojeta, 1974; Salvini-Plawen, 1980: Steiner, 1992; Engeser and Riedel, 1996; Runnegar, 1996) and the Bivalvia stands alone as a monophyletic clade.
This is because the total group is thought to have originated at the latest common ancestor of the Bivalvia and the Cyrtosoma: (Gastropoda (Cephalopoda, Scaphopoda)).

The clam is a filter feeder because the water taken in by the incurrent siphon is transported to the gills, where oxygen is filtered and zooplankton is filtered through by the bivalve’s cilia moved into the stomach.
The bivalvia organisms take food sources and water in through their incurrent siphon which is filtered through the gills and the food is then funneled in to the mouth.

In addition, we had the signal session for the multi-author endeavour to revise a world-wide reference book for bivalve workers: “The Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology, part Bivalvia”.

Rather than this, we would like to invite neontologists and paleontologists to present their most recent research results on any aspect of bivalve biology, including ecology, freshwater mussels, conservational biology, ontogeny, evolution, phylogenetics, palaeontology, systematics, and contributions on other molluscan taxa as long as they shed light on the origin and phylogeny of the Bivalvia.

The generally accepted systematic name (in contrary to some others) of all mussels, clams and scallops - Bivalvia - the two-valve molluscs - refers to the most important character of all bivalves, that separates them from all other molluscs: The shell is separated into two pieces.
Because of its high variability the shell form is also the most important identification criterion in bivalves.

 Class Bivalvia 1
The Class Bivalvia (Pelecypoda) contains more than 20,000 species of clams, oysters, mussels, scallops, cockles, shipworms, etc. ranging in size from tiny seed shells to the giant clams found in the South Pacific that weigh over 200 kg.
Bivalves are distinguished by being having laterally compressed bodies encased in two shell (valves) that are held together by a dorsal hinge ligament that causes the valves to open ventrally.
