Bix Beiderbecke taught himself to play the cornet when he was in his teens, and died in 1931 at the age of 28.
So, it is because of this sense of enthusiastic tradition, that classic corner honors the Bix 7 this month, with a heartfelt appreciation to Bill, Joan, and all of the people who put on the race.
Congratulations to the Bix 7 for 25 years of putting on a road race that is 2nd to none, and congratulations to Bill Rodgers and Joan Benoit Samuelson for giving us so many thrills for so many years, and for representing our sport in such a classy and enthusiastic way!

DAVENPORT, Iowa - (July 30, 2005) - Bix Biederbecke was a jazz musician of some repute, so it would have done his heart good to see the number of athletes using his namesake race - the 31st Quad-City Times Bix 7 - as a tune-up for next month's World Championships of Track and Field.
In only her second run over this hilly 7 mile course along the Mississippi, she disposed of a strong field that included Catherine Ndereba, who will defend her World Champs marathon title, and was bidding to win her fourth Bix title and coronet trophy in six tries.
His Bix win was his fourth major title of the season, and he's placed in the top 10 eight times.

Whether it was John Hudetz or someone else who got the wheels turning, the consensus among locals is that the Bix 7 or something similar to it was bound to come out of the woodwork and get big.
Even with tepid participation through its first few years of operation, the Bix filled that void, continuously grew and now, 25 years later, is one of the nation's premier summer competitions.
Possibly the biggest asset to the explosion of the Bix 7 was the 1980 boycott of the Moscow Olympics by the United States, Canada, Japan and West Germany.

Jim Grover's BIX series of tapes came alive again starting on March 10, 2001, the 98th anniversary of Bix's birth: it was broadcast by radio station WMKV.
Bart reinserted "cleaner'' recordings of Bix's music to deal with some audio bleeding that was on the original tapes we were working with." Bart, Frank and Bill have prepared an introduction.
Thus, the entire "Bix" show was heard in the Tampa Bay area of Florida on "Dixieland Brunch" over WMNF during that time period.

The Bix 7 (that's seven mile) road race attracts nearly 20,000 runners on each year, and lures thousands more cheering fans to the roadside.

In return, Bix, Tram etc. were proud to be in these top-class bands, learning interesting arrangements and getting the chance to actually play more jazz for more money than would have been possible in practically any other situation at the time.
The Bix, or whoever statue from a tree, is the kind of "folk art" that the show documents.

Although the idea of of a yearly gathering in Davenport, Iowa, Bix's hometown, had been discussed in the early fifties and in the sixties, it was not until 1971 that the idea took root.

DAVENPORT, IA - (April 9, 2003) - Officials from the Quad-City Times Bix 7 today officially kicked off registration for the 29th edition of the race with details of the first-ever All City Challenge.
It is a fitting tribute to Kapheim who was serving as the assistant race director for the Bix 7 and as president of the Cornbelt Running Club when she died suddenly on Dec. 21, 2002 at the age of 55.
Bix 7 Race Director Ed Froehlich hopes the QCA will embrace the idea and make it a tribute his friend would be proud of.

Except for 1984, when she was away winning the first women's Olympic marathon in history, she has returned to run the race every year since.

For the last several years, Bix fans have been gathering in front of Bix's last residence at 43-30 46th Street in Sunnyside, Queens, NY on the anniversay of his death which occurred on August 6, 1931.
The music and gathering begin at about 7 pm in the All Saints Churchyard, adjacent to the building where Bix lived and died in the summer of 1931.
Around 9 pm, the Bix fans, with candles lit, walk from the courtyard to the front of the building where Bix died and pay hommage to him by playing ""I'll Be A Friend With Pleasure", one of he last recordings made by Bix in his much too short life.

For the record Bill Rodgers, who has set American marks at 15K, 20K and 25K during his illustrious running career, finished this year's Bix 7 with a new 50-59 age group mark of 38:10 and has continued to break 50+ age-group records at road races throughout the country.
