Bixa orellana L. is a shrub or bushy tree which ranges from 3 to 10 meters in height.
Bixa’s flowers are pink, white, or some combination, and are 4 to 6 cm in diameter.
Bixa has been found in and about the towns of the Philippines (Quisumbing 1951), southeastern Africa (Williamson 1955), and Dominica (Honychurch 1980), and is commonly planted in Florida as an ornamental.

The antimicrobial activity and Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of the extracts Bixa orellana is effective against three or more of the following pathogenic microorganisms: Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus beta hemolitic, Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli and one yeast (Candida albicans).
This shows that Bixa orellana can be a be potential sources of a new antimicrobial agent and can be used to treat infections of microbial origin.
Preliminary pharmacological studies were performed on the methanol extract of Bixa orellana L. (Bixaceae) leaves to investigate neuro-pharmacological, anticonvulsant, analgesic, anti-diarrhea activity and effect on gastrointestinal motility.
