Black Athena Debate: Introduction and Overview
As it turned out, however, these principals contributed a rather brief exchange, and the remainder of the debate was taken up by a wide variety of contributors, both from within and outside the Academy.
At the core of the debate were two questions: were the ancient Egyptians a Black African people, and to what extent was the civilization of ancient Greece indebted to learning borrowed or stolen from ancient Egypt.

'BLACK ATHENA REVISITED' - The New York Review of Books
We chose some of the essays from among the sixty-eight reviews and articles dealing with Black Athena that had appeared by the summer of 1993; at the same time we also invited several experts to submit new essays concerned with topics that had not been treated in sufficient detail.
It is quite true that Professor Bernal invited himself to contribute to our volume by e-mail on November 16, 1993; we respectfully declined to accept Professor Bernal's self-invitation to contribute to a volume of responses to his own work.
Bernal asks why his published responses to many of the contributors to Black Athena Revisited were not included in our volume; we were asked to prepare a collection of responses to Black Athena—not to collect Professor Bernal's responses to his critics.

'BLACK ATHENA' REVISITED - The New York Review of Books
Martin Bernal's reply leaves untouched the main point, which is that a large number of qualified persons have subjected his assertions and arguments to detailed analyses and criticism.
On the first, the experts I cited show in detail that (subjectively) the inhabitants of Egypt thought of themselves as different from the peoples to the south of them who can properly be called "fl," and also that (objectively) they were in fact not marked by the same cranial and other characteristics as those peoples.
On the second, the experts show, with detailed discussion, that the procedures followed in Black Athena to produce Egyptian roots for Greek names and words are pre-scientific and non-scientific.

In fact, the label African was first used to refer to Phoenicians, and would never have been used to refer to the Black sub-saharan peoples that were known as Zanj, Sudanese or Aethiopian.

It is sad and scary how fls are attempting to pillage alien cultures (Egyptian for instance) out of an inability or unwillingness to acknowledge their own for what it is. It is equally sad that certain "scholars" are trying to downplay Egyptian contribution and indeed, supremacy, in the ancient world.
