The Irish clog dance all but disappeared by the end of the 19th century because of the mixing of the Clog and the African-American tap dances.
The Black Bottom was formally introduced by Perry Bradford in Nashville, Tennessee in 1919 when he wrote the song "The Black Bottom Dance." Bradford's sheet music had the music as well as the dance instructions printed on them.
The Black bottom was basically a solo challenge dance, predominately danced on the "Off Beat." It is thought to be the rhythmic prototype for modern tap dance phrasing.

George Snowden renamed the dance from Breakaway to Lindy Hop at dance contests at the Harvest Moon Ball in Central Park in September 1927 or at the Savoy Ballroom in 1928 (the story varies).
The two basic dance moves of Lindy Hop are the swing out, an 8-count move that usually starts and ends in open position, and the Charleston, an 8-count move that usually starts and ends in closed position.

However, it has been reported that the Black Bottom was derived from an earlier and similar dance called the "Echo." The dance was done all over the South before Bradford wrote his song in 1919.
In 1926 the "Black Bottom" became the rage and replaced the Charleston all together with the exception of it being done in the Breakaway, with the Lindy Hop eventually replacing the Black Bottom all together.
The 2002 Chicago film has no Black Bottom but Roxie Hart does and it is not just a brief screenshot of her doing it but a full routine, it is very good.

The dance was "rediscovered" by Sylvia Sykes and Jonathan Bixby in the 1980's (the dance also benefited from the swing dance "revival" of the 1990's).
Dance choreographers (to include Collins) would often replace the circular type movements of the Lindy Hop and Jitterbug with movement along a straight line or "slot" so they could place more couples on the floor without losing their faces to the camera.

The New York Times announced: "NEGRO DANCE DERBY ENDS.; Stopped After Sixteen Days by Order of Commissioner Harris." However there are publications that use the term Lindy Hop prior to this date, so number one is probably closer to the correct story.
These dances were known as "Jazz Dances." The Lindy was the first form of swing "White America" had seen and was about to fall in love.

Black choreographer Clarence Robinson is listed as bringing tap dancing to the Cotton Club in 1934 by the Haskins book.
