The US Navy had adopted the Consolidated P2Y and Martin P3M models for this role in 1931, but both aircraft proved to be underpowered and hampered by short ranges and low maximum payloads.
The US Navy requested further development in order to bring the aircraft into the category of patrol-bomber, and in October 1935 the prototype was returned to Consolidated for further work.
It was an RAF Coastal Command Catalina with a USN Pilot among the British crew that located the German battleship Bismarck on May 26, 1941 while it tried to evade the Royal Navy forces that would sink within a couple of days.

Almost a decade after the end of the Sharks, Royal Navy flyers have returned to the show circuit under the name the Black Cats – although their Lynx aircraft remain stubbornly Fleet Air Arm grey.
The Black Cats are an offshoot of 702 Naval Air Squadron, t he Lynx training unit based at RN air station Yeovilton.
The Black Cats appeared last year in shows as far apart as Southend and Biggin Hill to Lanveoc in France – the home of the French Navy flyers, where the British team appeared as Les Chats Noir.

They flew night search and attack missions and called themselves "Black Cats." Catalinas sent to rescue downed fliers were called "Dumbos," after the Walt Disney flying elephant cartoon character.

Helen Pavlovsky (in Hudson - she is also one of the nurses with the oral history at NHC linked above) refers to a ghost legend, yowling fl cats in the night and paper shortages so severe that patient records were kept on scraps.
She notes "The museum [containing stuffed birds and Queen Victoria's wheel chair], the Gray Lady [the ghost], the fl cats, and the nightly air-raids all seemed to form an integral part of the atmosphere." The work was hard and conditions anything but desirable, but there was time for the countryside and recreation.
