Tiny Mix Tapes: Black Dice Review
Although it can be counterproductive to historicize Black Dice's music in such a linear fashion, I find it extremely exciting that these young noise-mongers are willing to go out on such far-reaching limbs while stringing their influences with them.
Black Dice and Wolf Eyes, two of today's most popular noise sculptors (at least among twentysomethings), have consolidated to produce 30 minutes of that noise that you either love, hate, or simply don't understand.
Whether Black Dice creates the sounds with guitars, flutes, or banjoes, the fact remains that it's something they can definitely call their own, remaining consistent and insistent throughout its 22-minutes of rarely chartered territory.

Of course, Black Dice will not be lighting up the discothèques anytime soon, but the addition of sequenced grooves on tracks such as “Treetops” expands their musical palate even further away from the rock ‘n’ roll noise of their youth.

There’s a pleasant irony inherent to Black Dice’s surroundings, a context not entirely separate of the band’s sound.
Still, as evidenced by live and recorded output, Black Dice is a gloriously schizophrenic phenomenon, and “Cone Toaster” is less a dramatic departure than a new, and possibly non-committal excursion.
Things culminate with the introduction of more organic textures, dropping live percussion and guitar in the mix, an integrated sound that is increasingly the Black Dice strong suit, a textural ratio parallel to the rhythmic interface of noise and techno.

On their earlier 7" releases, Black Dice blended Gravity-style hardcore (not hard to imagine, since their first release was on Gravity) with an over-the-top extremity reminiscent of former D.C. terrorists Void.
Here, Black Dice are discovering themselves and setting out on their own unique direction, one informed not only by violent hardcore of the past but also by the stylings and sentiments of some of the other bands that have crept out of the Providence, RI scene, like Lightning Bolt, Mindflayer, Arab on Radar, and Mr.
The last three pieces evoke more of the earlier Black Dice motifs of crushingly powerful hardcore, although one, which, clocking in at nearly four-and-a-half minutes, is easily the longest track on the album, degenerates into a numbing, tweaked-out drone reminiscent of Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music.

Though still hazy and dreamy, Black Dice emerge as a band on untouchably original terrain, where dub, tropicalia, and the entire history of psychedelic rock swirl in a heady concoction.
With plenty of critical support - "Cone Toaster" was New York Times' Single of the Year; "Beaches and Canyons" made Rolling Stone editors' Top 5 - Black Dice remain provocative and uncompromising, follow their own rules, constantly reinvent themselves, and challenge listener preconceptions.

Black Dice's low-frequency torture techniques have been honed over the course of several full-lengths and a slew of twelve-inches and EPs.
That mode of thinking seems far too safe for the men of Black Dice, who've made their mark by consistently confounding expectations and bathing their most pop-addled moments in frazzled white noise and scorn.
Black Dice still have a tendency to degenerate into a sonic mess that sounds like an eight-bit gaming system committing suicide -- especially on stuttering bleep-outs like "Street Dude" and "Smiling Off"-- but the pummeling rhythmic pulses help to downplay their forays into forests of unlistenability.

Black Dice find a resting point in the next couple songs, with the serene "Heavy Manners," allowing the guitar, vocals, and effects to carry the rhythmic pulse throughout the song, and "Aba," short and sweet with a pretty synth melody.
Another couplet follows, each returning to the dissonant cacophony Black Dice fans and followers have come to expect, both are rhythmic but clouded by a mess of squeals and a roaring noise.
Black Dice aren't making compromises despite any notions of pressure since the worldwide DFA deal, which includes exclusive manufacturing and distribution by Astralwerks/Caroline in North America, but they are clearly evolving and embracing more.

On Creature Comforts, Black Dice again tackles a corner of experimental music with relatively fresh ears—this time shedding the propulsive rhythms and high-energy fluxes for a raw, punk-tinged take on musique concrète.
Without the intensification that density once provided them, Black Dice’s sounds seem uncomfortably flat, especially for listeners more closely attuned to experimental music—there’s an odd “throwback” quality to the band’s current template, and one is left to wonder how much of it is intentional.
For the first time, one is left with the impression that Black Dice could do with a little more research, focused fine-tuning, perhaps even a bit more inspiration—at last, they seem to have found a guise that will take a little more work to fit.
