		Based on a John Paul Jones bass riff that first coalesced during rehearsals at Headley Grange in late 1970, "Black Dog" is one of the heaviest Zeppelin numbers of them all.

		Obviously you considered Dog in the Sand, maybe also I'll Be Blue...there are a few from BLD that almost fit the bill, but aren't quite lullabys.
		It's the only time during the song that Frank actually sings a discernible melody (albeit one that consists of only 2 notes).

		Hudson's songwriting is a real standout as it is on the later disc, even more impressive since some of the songs date back nearly ten years to when the band was just hitting twenty, Hudson's "Mary Jane," "Dead End Street," and "Big Black River" are among the album's most memorable and inspirational moments.
		One of the best songs, Hudson's "Dead End Street", was so good that Blue Mountain re-cut it for the Homegrown album, but the original version is stronger because the Hilltops gave it an urban edge to go with its drug-deal scenario.
