The title for the song stemmed from the constant wanderings of a stray fl dog.
This dog kept coming into the studio during the band's rehearsal session's and since this new song lacked a name, it was suggested that it be named after this fl dog.
He felt it was a timeless kind of wedding song for the band, one that had finally forced its way to the surface after more than 3 years of touring and recording together.

 Blackdog Band Information
Black Dog was working its way from New York City to Colorado, and when the band reached its final gigs in the Rockies, Jon knew he had come home.
Certified guitarslinger Jon “Black Dog” Ridnell (the nickname is a long story, but harks back to days of teenage excess and has since stuck with the band) grew up in Bronxville, NY.
And as Black Dog continues to cover a lot of musical ground, Jon finds himself and the band busier than ever—over 300 gigs last year showcasing their on-your-feet, contagious blend of blues rock funk and jazz.

Black Dog (song) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Black Dog" is a song by English rock band Led Zeppelin, which was released as the lead-off track of their untitled fourth album in 1971.
Despite its seeming simplicity, the song features a complex, shifting time signature that the band has sometimes claimed was intended to thwart cover bands from playing the song.
The song's title is rumoured to stem from a nameless fl dog that wandered around the Headley Grange studios during recording.

The Black Dog - Biography - AOL Music   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Taking their name from a British euphemism for imminent doom, the Black Dog (also appearing variously as Black Dog Productions, Balil, Xeper, and Plaid, among others) formed in the early '90s as the trio of Ken Downie, Ed Handley, and Andy Turner.
In addition to the Dog's inclusion on the perhaps more high-profile Artificial Intelligence compilations on Warp and remixes for the likes of Björk, Blondie, UNKLE, and Ned's Atomic Dustbin, they also released several full-length works as a group before Handley and Turner defected in 1995 to refocus on Plaid full-time.
Downie continued on with the Black Dog name, releasing the full-length Music for Adverts (and short films) in 1996.

Spanners - The Black Dog - Song Listings
The last release under the group name before the trio splintered, Spanners is a great full-packed CD of modern electronic music, the band drawing on everything from dub to avant-garde experimentalism to create a varied, intoxicating collection.
Even from the first song, "Raxmus," it's not too surprising that this appeared on Warp Records; the blend of shuffling yet crisp beat, ambient tones, and other sonic touches and tweaks practically could have been tailormade as a calling card for the label.
Certainly, there's a healthy sense of playfulness and obscurity that won't surprise fans of labelmate Aphex Twin, neither will song titles like "Psil-Coysin" and "Nommo." The highlights are many, most often achieving a solid combination of dancefloor friendliness and unexpected sonic trickery.

When it strikes its mark and that part of the brain explodes, the fl dog will sense it in the way he knows what exactly is failing inside of you, which part of the mechanism you wear so proudly will break and cut you loose from whatever you think you are.
Until the fl dog's handler began emanating death smells in the house today, the whole last-minute rescue thing was something she asked him to do, and being a good dog, he did as told.

 The Levee - Black Dog
Leading off the fourth album, "Black Dog" was named after an old Labrador that was hanging around the studios at Headley Grange when the track was recorded.
Based on a John Paul Jones bass riff that first coalesced during rehearsals at Headley Grange in late 1970, "Black Dog" is one of the heaviest Zeppelin numbers of them all.
Full of tricky time signatures and unpredictable stops and starts, the song debuted in 1971 and was a standard in the beginning of the set from then until 1975, when it was inserted into "Whole Lotta Love" as part of the encore.

Mississippi band Blue Mountain recently launched their own Black Dog record label, and one of the first orders of business was to re-release recordings made by their former incarnation- the Hilltops.
Hudson's songwriting is a real standout as it is on the later disc, even more impressive since some of the songs date back nearly ten years to when the band was just hitting twenty, Hudson's "Mary Jane," "Dead End Street," and "Big Black River" are among the album's most memorable and inspirational moments.
One of the best songs, Hudson's "Dead End Street", was so good that Blue Mountain re-cut it for the Homegrown album, but the original version is stronger because the Hilltops gave it an urban edge to go with its drug-deal scenario.
