The Black Dog - Biography - AOL Music
Taking their name from a British euphemism for imminent doom, the Black Dog (also appearing variously as Black Dog Productions, Balil, Xeper, and Plaid, among others) formed in the early '90s as the trio of Ken Downie, Ed Handley, and Andy Turner.
As Plaid, Ed Handley and Andy Turner had already released a handful of material (including an album) prior to meeting Downie, but their time spent in BDP was their most productive up to that point.
In addition to the Dog's inclusion on the perhaps more high-profile Artificial Intelligence compilations on Warp and remixes for the likes of Björk, Blondie, UNKLE, and Ned's Atomic Dustbin, they also released several full-length works as a group before Handley and Turner defected in 1995 to refocus on Plaid full-time.

Amazon.com: Bytes: Music: Black Dog Productions   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Much of the music on this, and other early Black Dog/Black Dog Productions releases was obviously inspired by original stateside techno from the mid-to-late eighties and early ninties, especially by Detriot Godfathers Derrick May and Carl Craig.
Due to artistic differences, the three-headed canine force known mostly as "the Black Dog" split up in the mid-ninties with founder Ken Downey keeping the name and keeping a generally low profile, and Ed Handley and Andy Turner sticking with their excellent former side-project known as "Plaid".
Black Dog's "Bytes" is a very electronic recording with a very human element at its core, posessing more character and sounding more emotional and alive than most rock or pop music being released today.

The Black Dog   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Ken Downie, Ed Handley, and Andy Turner formed The Black Dog in the early '90s in response to a declining rave scene dominated by lackluster hardcore and techno.
After releasing a few underground successes on their own Black Dog Productions imprint (including the painfully limited "Virtual" and "Age of Slack"), the trio signed to Sheffield's infamous Warp Records and released their '92 debut album, Bytes.
In splicing runaway breaks with edgy synths, The Black Dog was slapped with the same "intelligent techno" tag as Autechre, B12, and Stasis.

It was a glorified big rig bumper car and truck smash 'em up, roll 'em over, blow 'em to bits, confusing, 'how many holes can we hide in the script' ride and a lousy way to spend an hour or so.
At a time when the majority of scripts are moving away from this stereotypical portrayal of Bible believers, "Black Dog" stands alone.

Overstock.com: Black Dog Productions - Bytes : Music
As one of the leading lights of the early 90s IDM (intelligent dance music) movement, the trio calling themselves The Black Dog were responsible for some of the moments in the then-still-being-defined idiom of contemporary electronic music.
And whether the concept of `intelligent` dance music is itself an oxymoron and endlessly debated, it`s unquestionably the consensus that the dark hounds of Warp-style beatmusic were some of the genre`s leaders.
The triad that was the Dog would later split, with two-thirds becoming the equally enigmatic Plaid, but this studio-constructed pooch BYTES his way right into electronica`s history books.

Drifting: A Director's Log: Black Hole
Back in the mid-nineties, around the time my voice was breaking and Pulp Fiction was coming to steal me back to cinema after my pre-adolescent flirtations with comic books, I caught a glimpse of some of the crisp, haunting artwork from a book called Black Hole, by Charles Burns.
It was an image of some monstrous form: a misshapen head, its face twisted in misery, atop a twisted, extruded spine of a body.
I knew that Burns' graphic-novel-in-progress had something to do with teen sexuality, and the dynamic between that subject and that image wedged the title in my head.

Although Plaid pre-existed the association, the duo's Ed Handley and Andy Turner spent most of their early recording years with Ken Downie as the dancefloor-confounding Black Dog Productions.
Meshing well with Downie's vision of heavily hybridized post-techno and obscurantist thematics, the pair brought several nascent Plaid tracks to the Black Dog table on the group's debut, Bytes, a collection of tracks recorded by various iterations of the three members.
Handley and Turner (whose mutual love for early hip-hop contributed BDP's more bawdy, street-level grit) split from Downie in 1995, and since then have rechanneled their efforts full-time into their first project, releasing an EP on the neo-electro Clear label before signing to Warp.
