The Black Francolin, Francolinus francolinus, is a (Click link for more info and facts about gamebird) gamebird in the pheasant family (Pheasants; quails; partridges) Phasianidae of the order (Pheasants; turkeys; grouse; partridges; quails; chickens; brush turkeys; curassows; hoatzins) Galliformes, gallinaceous birds.
It is one of the few (Click link for more info and facts about francolin) francolins to have a range outside (The second largest continent; located south of Europe and bordered to the west by the South Atlantic and to the east by the Indian Ocean) Africa.
Black Francolin takes a wide variety of plant and (Small air-breathing arthropod) insect food.

Black francolins appear to be well adapted to cultivated crops, tall enough to offer shelter and open beneath to provide escape routes and easy travel.
The fl francolin must have been a resident bird of Cyprus for a great many years for it has figured in the early literature of travellers to the island.

Black head and chest, white spot on the cheek, brown collar around the neck, the rest of the body spottled with white or chestnut-brown spots, chevrons, and bars.
When disturbed, the francolin does not fly up but tries to sneak away and reach cover in dense vegetation.
In antiquity, the francolin was sought after as a delicacy whose meat, according to a lost comedy by Aristophanes, "is the sweetest meat to cook at the victory feast" (Athenaeus 388B, from Aristophanes' Storks).

In the late afternoon a few Black Colobus were seen but as we waited for dark the hoped for Bates's Nightjars did not appear and we had to make do with a pair of Freckled Nightjars instead.
As luck would have it both groups encountered Black Guineafowl on their respective walks which was a relief as this secretive bird can be very difficult to see.
The walk also produced Coqui Francolin, Black-rumped Buttonquail, the local form of White-bellied Bustard, known as Barrow's Bustard (the male with its distinctive tawny-buff hind-neck), Rufous-naped Lark of the form malbranti, Short-tailed Pipit, ‘Teke' (an as yet undescribed species), Dambo and Tinkling Cisticolas and a Marsh Owl which was flushed in daylight.

These are very interesting birds that do well in captivity, but many others are not at this time found in captivity and thus offer a challenge and potential for captive propagation.
There are several types of these birds and there is the Black type that is well known in the USA.
The race of the Black found in the States are probably the Indian Subspecies (Francolinus francolinus asiae).

Several sightings of cacophonous families of rare Nahan's Francolins, Northern White-faced Owl, Black-shouldered Nightjar, Narina Trogon, White-thighed Hornbill, Black-capped Apalis, Lemon-bellied Crombec, Chestnut-capped Flycatcher and the rare Ituri Batis were particularly notable.
The world-renowned Queen Elizabeth NP was our next destination and we had sightings of Dwarf Bittern, Scaly Francolin, Common Button-quail on the ground, African Crake, Greater Painted-Snipe, good numbers of Brown-chested Lapwings and White-tailed Lark.
The very localized Golden Monkey was well-watched and nearby, we found a displaying White-winged Warbler and a colony of Northern Masked Weavers, a long, long way from their previously known range.

At Afula the most common migrant was Black Stork (76) with some tens of Lesser Spotted Eagle, Levant Sparrowhawk, Black Kite and a single Red-footed Falcon.
The wagtail was particularly interesting because it had some fl feathers on its breast, potentially confusing with juvenile White Wagtail.
Closer to the border with Jordan there were plenty of Chuckar (40), Black Francolin (3) and a single Desert Finch.

The dams offer the only real extensive freshwater on the island and we should see Black Francolin, Woodchat Shrike, Tawny Pipit, Short-toed Lark and several wheatear species as well as waders, herons, warblers, Kingfisher, hirundines and, possibly, Little Crake, Baillon's Crake and Masked Shrike.
The area is of ancient volcanic origin with stony ground, huge rocks around, small bushes and an absence of mature trees.
It's a big reserve which includes wetlands, the river Ropotamo and a part of Strandza mountain, with wet deciduous forests, sand dunes and a part of the sea coast.

I had hoped to see a Painted Francolin as Sariska is supposed to be a good guide for this species.
There are very large numbers of Grey Francolin, and I did see a male Black Francolin.
We also saw two francolin that were neither Grey nor male Black, but they disappeared before I could get them in the binocs.

Later in the outscirts of Dubai a Black Francolin (introduced game bird) with clearly visible fl outer tail feathers crosses the road.
The afternoon is again spent at Dibba Dairy farm: Grey Francolin, Rock Thrush, Red rumped Swallow, Isabelline Shrike (phoenicuroides race), Short-toed Lark, White Wagtail, Yellow Wagtail (feldegg race and others), Red-throated Pipit, Water Pipit, Meadow Pipit, Sparrowhawk, European Bee eater, Green Bee-eater.
The pumping station is reached through a hole in the fence: 10 Little Grebe (of which 1 breeding), 1 Little Ringed Plover, 1 Isabelline Shrike, 4 Mallard, 20 Black-winged Stilt (a nest containing one egg), 1 Garganey, 4 Snipe, 1 Pintail Snipe, 4 Wood Sandpiper, 1 Egyptian Goose.

South African Shelduck, Cape Vulture, Black Harrier, African Black Oystercatcher, Hottentot Buttonquail, Striped Flufftail, Cape Francolin, Damara Tern, Thickbilled Lark, Agulhas Longbilled Lark, Cape Bulbul, Southern Tchagra, Orangebreasted Sunbird, Cape Sugarbird.
De Hoop is an excellent place to find the Southern Tchagra, which can be found skulking in the thicker bush in the coastal fynbos and edges of forested gorges.
The open grasslands to the east of the rest camp holds Cape Francolin, Pied Starling, Grassveld Pipit and Orangethroated Longclaw.

I've not seen a Black Francolin, though they are found in Hawaii, which I once visited for a few days.
I found an interesting note about Black Francolins mentioned in Aristophanes's play, The Birds.
If anyone has other suggestions or comments about good field guides or other resources regarding the birds of Iraq, please email me! And if any other people serving there have photos of the birdlife there, I'd love to see them.

For example, when we read "vulture", we probably imagine a large fl bird with a bald red head and white collar, the typical cartoon vulture.
Aristophanes' vulture, however, is a relatively small white bird with a yellow face and beak.

From our room we could hear, and eventually saw, a Black Francolin who was sat on top of a mound giving his loud and very distinctive call.
Michael and Margaret meanwhile had taken a walk to the Tomb of the Kings and found an obliging Wryneck as well as also seeing and hearing the Black Francolin.
Our first stop produced a Black Francolin, lots of colourful Bee-eaters sat on wires and a distant female Red-footed Falcon.

At 7.30 pm I spotted a Scops Owl spp perched up high about 15 metres from the fountain, (I had scanned this obvious perch 15 minutes before and there was nothing so the Owl must have flown in from elsewhere) We scoped it and studied the bird in detail over the next 20 minutes.
Park at the end of the dirt track by gate and walk up hump and along gravel pits to view you can then walk back beside the river.
We were contemplating going all the way up to Sivri Kaya for the Black Grouse but the days we lost due to bad weather put pay to that idea.
