  All About Birds: Black Guillemot
A fl-and-white bird of the northern seas, the Black Guillemot breeds along the coasts of Canada and Greenland.
The Black Guillemot is more susceptible to ingestion and biomagnification of marine pollution than other alcids because it takes prey from shallow water or at the sea floor.
The Black Guillemot shows a considerable amount of geographic variation in the amount of white in its winter plumage.

The Black Guillemot or 'tystie' is a circumpolar species, concentrated around the North Atlantic, Barents Sea, Baltic and smaller numbers around the Chukchi Sea in northern Alaska and north-eastern Siberia.
Black Guillemot nests are hidden in rock crevices and under boulders, which makes them extremely difficult to census during the breeding season.
Unfortunately, during the SCR census, counts of Black Guillemots in the Republic of Ireland were conducted in June and not during the pre-breeding period.

In northern Alaska Black Guillemots breed in ground-level cavities whose entrances are blocked with snow until early summer temperatures are warm enough to melt the winter accumulation.
Because female guillemots do begin to form eggs until they have access to a nesting cavity, the timing of egg laying is sensitive to changes in snow disappearance in the spring.
Black Guillemots colonies are frequently limited by the availability of suitable nest sites as evidenced by rapid occupation of cavities created by researchers and the presence of substantial nonbreeding populations at many colonies.
