Black Isle Studios was a division of the electronic entertainment company Interplay Entertainment that specialized in the creation of computer role-playing games.

Black Isle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Black Isle (Scottish Gaelic: an t-Eilean Dubh) is an eastern area of Ross and Cromarty, Highland, Scotland.
Despite its name, the Black Isle is not an island, but a peninsula (Scottish Gaelic uses the same word for island and peninsula), surrounded on three sides by water — the Cromarty Firth to the north, the Beauly Firth to the south, and the Moray Firth to the east.
The Black Isle was one of the earliest parts of the northern Highlands to experience "agricultural improvements", and was settled with many Lowland shepherds and farmers, especially from the north east.

Interplay's internal RPG studio was formally renamed "Black Isle Studios" in 1998, just in time for the sequel Fallout 2--though in the sequel, the vision of having a compact, open-ended game seemed lost.
Black Isle then went on to lend production assistance to an up-and-coming Canadian developer, named BioWare, with a 1998 game called Baldur's Gate, which let you play as a fledgling adventurer who was revealed to be of divine heritage.
Black Isle went on to produce its own role-playing game in 2000 with the hack-and-slash Dungeons and Dragons adventure Icewind Dale, which was released at around the same time as Blizzard's highly anticipated action RPG sequel Diablo II.

Black Isle was established in 1998 as the RPG division of Interplay while the development team was working on Fallout 2, said Feargus Urquhart, director of Black Isle and official whip-cracker on the team.
The purpose of creating Black Isle "was to create a group that would focus purely on making Forgotten Realms and Planescape AD&D branded titles, and to continue the legacy of the RPG's that gave Interplay its name in the mid to late '80s."
While Black Isle has developed Torment and Icewind Dale (and is currently working on the Heart of Winter expansion for IWD), the team also developed the non-D&D Fallout series.

IGN: Another Black Isle Source Comes Forward
December 19, 2003 - For those of you who may not have been following this developing story, Black Isle Studios, developers of the Fallout, Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment games was claimed to have been closed down and Fallout 3 cancelled, according to a posting made by a former employee on the Interplay forums.
Recently, a source came forward supporting these claims, which was followed up quickly by a formal response from Interplay denying the closure and stating that the other Black Isle projects were still on target while Fallout 3 was under review.
This individual also offers up some speculation on why the company would apparently be refusing to admit to the closure of Black Isle and the elimination of the Fallout 3 project: Interplay is a publicly-traded company and must therefore put a positive spin on events.
