slant // magazine.com: DVD Review - Broken Lizard's Club Dread
Not unlike their last film, Super Troopers, the comedy team Broken Lizard (seemingly trying to brand themselves as the new National Lampoon) puts themselves in all the starring roles here and brings on one real actor to anchor the thing.
While at first it's a relief that Broken Lizard doesn't try to spoof specific horror films, a la the Scary Movie franchise, that might ultimately have been a better road for it to have taken—at least then it might have been possible to remember more of the film.
In fact, they're pretty non-stop: Danny Boyle apparently shot the opening title sequence; digital wizards had to remove Erik's "stack" during the campfire sequence; and since the film's extras were cast in Mexico, you can tell that the supposedly white resort in the film isn't, well, so white after all during some long shots.

 Review: Broken Lizard's Club Dread
Comedy group Broken Lizard (they hate being called a "troupe") broke out onto the scene back in early 2001 when they showcased their film Super Troopers at the Sundance Film Festival.
I had seen Broken Lizard's first film, Super Troopers, and was impressed by the type of dead-pan humor that they used.
Broken Lizard fans will definitely ensure a successful opening and be slightly disappointed, while newcomers to the group who haven't seen Super Troopers will probably laugh their asses off.

 IGN: Club Dread Review
Though Paxton isn't even one of the members of the Broken Lizard comedy troop, he seems to understand the tone of the film better than the rest of the cast.
For the Broken Lizard gang, it's too bad they had to wait until they'd already finished their film to get an outside opinion.
Paxton plays a hippie burnout singer who's bitter that his song "Pina Coladaburg" was superseded in fame by Jimmy Buffett's "Margaritaville." He stumbles through the film, stinking drunk and muttering mantra's for his "paradise" resort staff to follow and playing goof-ball acid burnout songs with his guitar.

The first Broken Lizard film was the as-yet unreleased PUDDLE CRUISER, and Broken Lizard submitted (and got into and screened) said film at the Sundance Film Festival, and also sent a VHS screener to the View Askew offices.
Yadda yadda yadda, we all hit it off, Rich came on as the producer of BIG HELIUM DOG, and since we were all big PUDDLE CRUISER/Broken Lizard fans, most of the Broken Lizard team came on board to appear in acting roles in BIG HELIUM DOG, and the rest is history.
I checked out the Broken Lizard website, and it says that Puddle Cruiser will be released soon enough.

The Broken Lizard comedy team has become the target of a group of comedy cult gurus, whom I am sure will enjoy hearing their favs talk about the film, but for others it just won't tickle their funny bone.
Along with the movie the only special features are two audio commentaries one with the director Jay Chandrasekhar and the other with the Broken Lizard comedy troupe, both of which are similar in style, and for me, both are trying too hard to be funny.
The two commentaries are so similar in style and content that they really should have been turned into one, since it is a little difficult having to watch the film a second time, let alone a third.

The brooding theme for the lizard itself, highlighted in the opening credits of the film, is ironically the least interesting.
A terrible plot and extremely harsh ciritcal response to the film put a dent in Devlin and Emmerich's action film careers, and would be noted by film music fans as the end --at least for a while-- of the working relationship between the two filmmakers and their friend and composer David Arnold.
In the central portion of the film and score, when the main character is taken off the case, Arnold kicks in a dramatic secondary love theme that prevails in several cues later in the score.

Finally, there's no indication that anyone with a sense of dramatic structure had a hand in "Spawn" -- which is not surprising, perhaps, in a film helmed by technicians.

FilmJerk.com - Film Review: "Broken Lizard's Club Dread"
If the Broken Lizard has another opportunity to make a film (that sound you hear is me fingering rosary beads, praying that doesn’t happen), maybe they should just have it feature each member of the troupe simply introducing themselves.
I’ll admit, I was no fan of the Broken Lizard’s last film,“ Super Troopers.” “Club Dread” presents a nice new locale for the comedy troupe to work with, along with an interesting stab at a tricky mixture of genres: gruesome horror and comedy.
As neat and admirable as the idea for “Club Dread” is, the Lizard gang once again sinks a good idea with their trademarked laugh-free brand of joke telling and acting.

For the most part, "Broken Lizard's Club Dread" is so expertly executed that it would be easy to mistake it for a slasher thriller instead of a parody of slasher films.
"Broken Lizard's Club Dread" is rated R for scenes of horror violence (including various stabbings and slashings), occasional use of strong sexual profanity and crude sexual slang terms, graphic gore, simulated drug use (marijuana and ecstacy), male and female nudity, and scenes of simulated sex.
This is very different from what the Broken Lizard comedy team has done before.

 :: rogerebert.com :: Broken Lizard's Club Dread
Whether it works or not is a little hard to say; like "Super Troopers" (2002), the previous film by the Broken Lizard comedy troupe, it has lovable performances, very big laughs, and then some down time while everybody (in the cast as well as the audience) waits to see what willhappen next.
The leader of the troupe and director of both films is Jay Chandrasekhar, whose character in "Super Troopers" took delight in spreading confusing hints about his ethnic origin.
"Broken Lizard's Club Dread" is a definitive demonstration, if one is needed, that "The Real Cancun" was way too real.

Broken Lizard's Club Dread (2004): Kevin Heffernan, Jay Chandrasekhar, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter - PopMatters Film Review
Broken Lizard (founded, appropriately, on a college campus) is too democratic (and maybe, in its gaggle of alterna-frat dudes, a touch too generic) to have a breakout star, although Kevin Heffernan, the goodhearted masseur Lars here and the splendid jackass Farva in Troopers, comes close.

The seventies and eighties also return in Broken Lizard's Club Dread (chasing Miracle in theatres and now on DVD), a tepid slasher spoof singularly elevated, if not redeemed, by a nude scene from Cabin Fever's Jordan Ladd.
It's a shame that, like the makers of Miracle, the comedic ensemble Broken Lizard were game to revive a bygone ethic with a script that's merely passé.
It's even there in how "Dream On" turns cynical on a dime, underscoring a series of American Graffiti post-scripts that portend a depressing fate for many of the players portrayed in the film as real estate agents and insurance brokers.
