The facility was primarily funded by the U.S. military, and it was mutually understood by the Department of Defence and the first Administrator of the facility that the main objective was to give the United States a technological advantage in warfare.
Research into radioactive decay, particle acceleration and gauss guns (electromagnetic propulsion weapons) led to the development of a ‘tau cannon’, which generated taus (very heavy electron-like particles) and used gauss technology to accelerate them to supersonic velocities, their energy sufficient to blast through walls.
Some researchers believed that if the properties of the crystals were better understood then they could be synthesised on Earth, allowing the development of compact teleportation devices, at a lesser construction cost to enormous displacement machinery at Black Mesa.
