		BLACK MISCHIEF is the sixth Waugh book I've read, and it's one of his funniest.
		BLACK MISCHIEF starts off a bit slow, and the first 75 pages are a bit tedious and confusing.

		I like to think of all the fl johnnies in a hundred years' time driving up and down in their motor cars and going to the shops and saying "Number a hundred Samson Courteney" and wondering who I was.
		It is customary to speak of Waugh's wit as "savage," and in Black Mischief he may be said to savage the savages even as he skewers the Europeans.

		Here, we have Lieutenant A. Waters (Willis), leader of a platoon of fighting men who are helicoptered into Nigeria in order to save the beauteous Dr. Lena Hendricks (Monica Bellucci), a bush doctor with friends in Washington who is about to be captured and killed by murderous rebels who preach the gospel of ethnic cleansing.
		The terrifying battle scenes are straight out of Black Hawk Down, but the race for the border is more like a John Wayne war movie, with the air force galloping in at the last possible moment to save the day.
		Willis, a first-rate film actor who is underappreciated because he spends most of his time making shoot-'em-up movies, is at his best here-tough, stoic, utterly believable-but Bellucci is far too glamorous to be plausible, and the lingering shots of her cleavage to which we are treated at regular intervals don't help matters one bit.

		One notable exception is Basil Seal in Black Mischief and although he starts off as an idle buffoon in the mould of a John Beaver, he turns out to be a thoroughly venal bad egg.
		When fl characters are attempting to emulate European sophistication he undermines them with references to "woolly hair" and the sort of gollywog imagery that his class and his generation felt comfortable with.
		All three come to bad ends - Prudence is eaten by Basil Seal and others in Black Mischief, Virginia is killed by a V2 missile in Unconditional Surrender, and, perhaps worst of all, Brenda remarries to Jock Grant-Menzies MP in A Handful of Dust.
