First Impressions - The Getaway: Black Monday // PS2 /// Eurogamer
The Getaway: Black Monday (which recently appeared, fittingly enough, at the Cannes Film Festival) maintains much of the mechanical structure of its forebear, preferring to augment the original's technology and gameplay in minor but effective ways while wholesale changes are reserved for its storytelling and presentation.
He's a slightly suspicious character, but as his nine-chapter story unfolds he makes serious headway in the fight to unmask the culprits behind this particular Black Monday, and Team Soho reckons we'll be drawn in by his story and grow to empathise with him the same way we did with Hammond and Carter.
The Getaway: Black Monday is in a promising state.

Garang's August 6 funeral in Juba was quiet, but the rioting has laid bare structural tensions that persist as the Khartoum government and the SPLM seek to consolidate a permanent peace on the north-south front of Africa's longest-running civil war.
Like the war itself, the unrest on what Sudanese term "fl Monday" has been widely depicted as driven by ethnic or religious hostility between the "Arab" Muslim north and the "African" Christian and animist south.
"Black Monday" and the succeeding events have certainly highlighted the fragility of the peace on the north-south front and underscored the weakness of a deal that excludes rebels in Darfur and parts of the east.

Part of this is because Black Monday, like its predecessor, is filled to the brim with nearly impenetrable British dialogue, including all kinds of cursing, region-specific slang, and accents you couldn't cut through with a burning knife.
Black Monday is altogether a less frustrating game than its predecessor, but that also makes it a much shorter one.
Black Monday should be commended for crafting another unique crime story with plenty of memorable, well-acted characters, but unfortunately it fails to create gameplay of equal caliber.

Review - The Getaway: Black Monday // PS2 /// Eurogamer
At least Black Monday's not so frustrating, then, which was something that killed many people's interest in the original's overly exacting mission design.
Maybe if any of the significant flaws of the original had been ironed out, and the missions were actually compelling, we wouldn't mind, but the excitement and thirst for vengeance of the original has been replaced by exceptionally ordinary shoot-'em-up missions, one on-rails shooting section, and a few awful stealth encounters.
To be honest, the best thing about Black Monday is the awesome title music and the accompanying animation.
