Wales as a holiday destination   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
Wales is a country surrounded by sea on three sides and joins England to it's east, a border roughly marked by an ancient giant earthwork called Offa's Dyke, which was constructed in the 8th century.
These glaciated mountain regions are cut through by narrow river valleys, and rolling moorland stretches from Denbigh, in the north, to the Glamorgan valleys in the south and up to the spectacular cliffs of the west coast.
Wales' lengthy coastline is the perfect environment for seals and seabirds, and is home to one of the world's largest gannet colonies as well as 30% of the world's entire Manx shearwater population.

Wales Riding Tour in Black Mountains, horseback riding holiday Wales, UK, wales riding vacation
Ride in the Black Mountains a truly magnificent and stunning countryside with narrow, flower-lined lanes leading to miles and miles of unspoiled mountains and moorland.
Wales remains a relatively unspoiled area of the United Kingdom, crippled last year as far as riding and agriculture by the onset of hoof and mouth disease which just about brought countryside riding to an abrupt halt.
There are water sports, including sailing, canoeing, and windsailing on nearby Llangorse lake as well as bird watching, fishing, mountain biking, and hill walking in the Black Mountains and nearby Brecon Beacons.

RIVER FLOODS ACROSS WALES OF 1998
The widespread flooding particularly at Northampton and Banbury was caused by prolonged rainfall.
However in Wales, with the exception of the Rivers Wye and Severn, long records (in excess of 50 years) of annual maxima river flows are limited and, in the case of small catchments, non-existent.
Such events in recent times include the tidal inundation at Towyn in North Wales in 1990, the widespread flooding in Mid and South Wales in 1979 when thousands of properties were flooded, and in Carmarthen in 1987 when the Tywi overtopped the flood defences.

Although the Hay-on-Wye literary festival is held in the heart of Wales's Black Mountains, with a programme dominated by big names of English and international literature, it is easy for festivalgoers to overlook the vibrant literary scene of Hay's host country.
The organisation, which runs events, courses and competitions, is presenting a Literature in Wales stand at the festival to remind visitors of the contemporary literary culture of the land still best known as the birthplace of Dylan Thomas and Bertrand Russell.
Set in the city's gothic quarter, it marries the urban thriller and historical drama genres, focusing on a musician and translator who is abducted by a Cathar sect in the Pyrenees.

Black Mountains, Wales. Travel guide & tourist information by Hostelbookers.com
The easternmost section of the National Park centres on the Black Mountains, far quieter than the central belt of the Brecon Beacons and skirted by the wide valley of the River Usk.
The only exception to the Black Mountains' unremitting sandstone is an isolated outcrop of limestone, long divorced from the southern belt, that peaks due north of Crickhowell at Pen Cerrig-calch (2302ft).
The Black Mountains have the feel of a landscape only partly tamed by human habitation: tiny villages, isolated churches and delightful lanes are folded into an undulating green landscape which levels out to the south around the pretty villages of Tretower and Crickhowell.

In the good ole US of A, a little thing called a "liability law" means that those of us who love horses and ride often are, while trying to enjoy our favorite pastime on vacation, typically not going to mount up on anything much more exciting than a 23 year old nag.
That is why I was stunned to discover on my trip to Wales in August of last year that not only was I put on a horse that truly did match my ability, but that galloping was actually something that was encouraged by our guides.
