He is said to have been born in the smithy, his father having been the flsmith of Black Notley near Braintree.
From Braintree school he was sent at the age of sixteen to Catharine Hall, Cambridge, whence he removed to Trinity College after about one year and three-quarters.
He occupied himself in writing books and in keeping up a wide scientific correspondence, and lived, in spite of his infirmities, to the age of seventy-six, dying at Black Notley on 17 January, 1705.

Black Notley Hospital has been part of the local community for almost a century, providing health care to literally thousands of people in Essex and beyond.
The word Black is removed from the hospital title and it becomes Notley Hospital, in order to aid staff recruitment.
In December, the new building is commenced at Broomfield Hospital to replace the Mid Essex orthopaedic wards and the rheumatology ward based at Black Notley Hospital.

At the Essex County Council Hospital, Black Notley, where there are three hundred Sanatorium beds for the treatment of tuberculosis, a maternity unit for tuberculous women was started in 1937, primarily due to the efforts of Dr. W.
For many of the young women treated at Black Notley, the future held only these alternatives, either to eke out a meagre existence from wages earned in a factory, to marry, or to be come the unwilling burden on a family in a suburban villa, in some cases no doubt already overcrowded.
At Black Notley, Cohen followed up 68 infants born of tuberculous mothers in the Unit at Black Notley; two had died of tuberculosis.

The Chairman and Secretary have been present as members of the public at the last three meetings of the Black Notley Parish Council and will continue to monitor each of the forthcoming monthly meetings up to, at least, the next Parish elections in May, 1999.
Currently these meetings are held in the Black Notley Community Association Hall, which is on the site of the old Black Notley Hospital that was recently closed down.
As you will have read in the Black Notley Community News for Spring 1998 (Issue No.25.) they claim to have some ideas, but are looking for further ideas from members of the public.

John Watkinson and Elizabeth Joslin of Black Notley Hall had a large family and John Watkinson's will shows him as a wealthy and successful man. His son John and his wife Mary Beadle also had a large family but lost most of their children in infancy or quite young.
Despite the fact that papers in Connecticut claim that Watkinsons were at Black Notley Hall for 500 years, there is not one Watkinson shown in the hearth tax records for Essex.
Black Notley burial register at ERO shows Sarah Watkinson of Bocking buried 29/1/1831 aged 60 and this really does look like Sarah Davey.

Just prior to the split of the old parish of Black Notley, the Residents Association carried out a survey of White Court to determine whether they would prefer to remain with Black Notley, or become part of Great Notley.
Great Notley Women's Institute held their A.G.M. Barbara Ball was our Visiting Adviser and guided us through the intricasies of the voting in of a new committee and President.

He completed this ichthyology after his return to Black Notley on the death of his mother in 1679, although the book, published somewhat lavishly in two volumes in 1686, sold badly.
The support for this work’s publication given by the Royal Society left it in such financial straits that, for his pains, the Society offered the editor of Newton’s Principia, Edmond Halley, the choice of £50 or fifty copies of Ray’s History of Fishes (he chose the latter).
