 Goya Xavier de Salas
The same spirit lay behind them as lay behind the paintings on the walls of the two rooms in his Quinta property: the ‘fl paintings’, so called because of the dominance of that colour.
He painted them in a way that was unusual by any standards, since, from a technical point of view, it is extremely rare for oil paints to be applied directly to plain whitewashed walls.
Their colouring is not ‘fl’: there are other shades and tones, which combine to produce an overpowering feeling of gloom, nowadays further accentuated by the condition of the paintings.

This was perhaps the most important painting of the entire Villa, although when it was transferred to canvas it lost a great part in his right end (what causes a strange asymmetry between the young sitting girl and the Great he-goat).
There are infinity of interpretations of this painting, associating to the dog to the infernal figure that guides the dead souls to the Hell, and suggesting it as a symbol of the abandonment and the neglect.
The paintings were exhibited in the Universal Exhibition of Paris of 1878 and later they were donated to the Prado Museum, where they are conserved nowadays.

 Goya's Black Paintings
It is known that Goya painted fourteen Black Paintings on the walls of the main room on the ground floor and on the walls of a large room of equal size on the first floor of the house.
The horror of the paintings and their gloomy, veiled colors have led many to believe that their creator was still recovering from his second near-fatal illness and may have been in deep depression.
Rather, the Black Paintings were a "premeditated, conscious construction purposefully designed to condition the sensibilities of those who would behold it."60 Goy a may have had a political objective in mind as he carefully composed the paintings as part of a multi-media presentation which would have delighted his liberal supporters.

I grew concerned about the fragility of the drawings on paper and the fact that they had to be protected with glass, which obscured some of the hard-won nuances.

The wash of lighter, colored paint pooled in the tiny hollows of the dark gessoed surface as it dried, creating a variation on both the rubbed pastels and the charcoals - here the lights settled in the troughs of the surface grain and the shadows broke through the crests.
