Black Rock was once the competitor of Buffalo for the terminus of the Erie Canal, but the canal was completed by building a lock on the Niagara River allowing it to terminate in Buffalo on Lake Erie in 1825.
In 1839, the Town of Black Rock was formed from the northern part of the Town of Buffalo.
Black Rock is now a neighborhood in the northwest part of the city.

The New York Times reported on Dec. 15, 2005 ( "Few State Prisoners Freed Under Eased Drug Law") that "When Gov. George E. Pataki signed a law a year ago reducing what he called "unduly long sentences" for drug crimes, he predicted that hundreds of nonviolent drug offenders would be released from prison.
New York spends more than $500 million a year to incarcerate nonviolent drug offenders, many of whom can rebuild their lives faster if they receive treatment, said Michael Blain of the Drug Policy Alliance, an organization that espouses reducing both drug misuse and drug prohibition, and promoting the sovereignty of individuals.
New York Newsday reported on March 1, 2001 ( "The War On Drug Laws") that Brown "is the target of activists because he has become the point man for the state's 62 district attorneys in lobbying against reform of the tough laws."

Black Rock Forest is an example of a typical northern hemisphere, northeastern deciduous forest in terms of forest composition, tree diversity and age.
The forest is located in the Hudson Highlands region of New York State, about 80 kilometers north of New York City (see Figure 1).
The two sites chosen for this study are located in the southern section of Cascade Brook Watershed; one site is on a ridge near the top of the watershed (the "upland site") and one is near a wetland that lies at the lowest point in the watershed, Glycerine Hollow (the "lowland site").
