  THE HISTORY OF BLACK ROSE
BLACK ROSE was now a four piece and as time went by, it was decided to keep it that way.
Mick brought a whole new element to the band as his guitar style was very different from anything the previous guitars had produced.
Adding a different edge to the music brought the band back up to speed and added new dimensions so much so that in the dawn of the new year of 2001, we were literally flying.

 Black Rose
Black Rose were formed in 1976 by Steve Bardsley and Marty Rahn who were two school friends from Saltburn in Cleveland (home of David Coverdale).
Firstly, the band decided to change its name to Black Rose (being keen Thin Lizzy fans), and secondly Ken and Charlie opted for other bands and were replaced by myself (guitar/vox) and Malla Smith (drums/vox).
The band recruited new people (notably guitarist Pat O'Neill who was another excellent player) and continued until 1987 when after recording a second album and having problems with a band in the U.S. with the same name, decided to call it a day.

The band still keep the majority of the set they've been playing since John joined the band as the singer, and even though the odd song may have altered here and there, the majority of it (and certainly the style of their selection of covers) remains unchanged.
As a band, this act are a good solid unit, and as good as any typical rock covers band playing the pub circuit, but it's their singer that gives them the edge and sets them apart from most of the other groups.
I realised that the band wanted to put on a great show and take the place by storm, but a lot of the punters in the room had never seen the group before, and quite honestly were a bit 'scared' by the singer's antics.

Although the band were starting to progress in both their live performances and songwriting, the lure of bigger and better things was too much for Charlie and Kenny who both got offers they couldn't refuse from more established bigger bands.
Unfortunately Chris decided for the second time that he would quit the band and move to the south of England where all the main record companies were based, and give it a crack 'darn sarf' in London.back to the drawing board and auditions for guitarists took place in the autumn of 1986.

That was a problem for the band because, even though he could legally work in a bar, he couldn’t legally drink in a bar.
