  BLACK SABBATH movie review
is virtually unknown in the United States, especially when you consider that it is one of the most effective horror movies ever made.
Roberto Nicolosi’s score is very effective when it blares at you with digital sound.
It will also cause you to wonder why in the hell they replaced this score with a far less effective one by Les Baxter in earlier American versions of the movie.

With this idea in mind, Black Sabbath decided that they should set out to be the musical approximation of horror movies by writing dark, gloomy songs, a formula they have stuck to now for over thirty years.
Sabbath’s frontman Ozzy Osbourne has become a heavy metal legend, adored by a whole generation of music fans and even today’s fans of metal are familiar with the band’s catalogue of songs.
The influence of Black Sabbath can be seen all over metal music, in fact the whole grunge explosion of bands in the early 1990s all credit Black Sabbath as being a major influence.

Black Sabbath was, in many ways, an underground band -- parents hated them, hippies hated them, self-respecting rockers hated them.
Not only was Black Sabbath suffering musically, but their credibility was in question by their devoted fans as well.
Black Sabbath continues to lurch forward in the '90s (sometimes with Osbourne back in the fold, as on 1998's live Reunion), oblivious of the criticism and declining record sales, but their early records continue to inspire -- as well as infuriate -- whole new generations of listeners.

Of the three stories included in Black Sabbath, the opening credits indicate the screenplay was "freely adapted from stories by Chekhov, Tolstoy, and Maupassant," but as Tim Lucas points out in his DVD liner notes, you would find it difficult, if not altogether impossible, to find copies of the stories that inspired the three episodes.
Black Sabbath ends with a sequence called "A Drop of Water." In his DVD liner notes, Tim Lucas suggests this episode "may well be the most chilling short film ever made." This claim strikes me as pure hyperbole.
Black Sabbath is now available on DVD from Image Entertainment in a widescreen presentation (1.78:1 aspect ratio) that has been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.

The best gag in the movie, if not the Greatest of All Time, involves Black's right butt cheek and Kyle Gass' left, on which twin domains lie birthmarks of mythical import.

Jack Black and Kyle Gass have a blast as wannabe rock stars in the sublimely silly "Pick of Destiny." It's one of a slew of movies opening this weekend in the Twin Cities.
Part of the enormous fun in watching Jack Black and Kyle Gass play the demented rock duo Tenacious D -- the two-headed love child of Black Sabbath, Molly Hatchet and Iron Maiden -- is observing their pleasure in the roles.
Black and Gass (who looks more like a portly insurance adjuster than a raging metalhead) have been performing as the D for 15 years live and on TV, to loud cult acclaim.

Blood and Black Lace Movie Review at Hollywood Video
The latest offerings include Blood and Black Lace, widely regarded as the first full-length giallo, and Twitch of the Death Nerve, which is known to be the precursor to Friday the 13th.
Blood and Black Lace involves a madman (or is it madwoman?) running amok in a house of fashion, a setting which affords the director the opportunity to show beautiful women as déshabillé as you could get in 1964.
The best extra on Blood and Black Lace, however, is Tim Lucas' astonishingly good commentary, which is up to par with the experts that Criterion uses for their releases.
