The White Sox dropped their third straight game in what was a bizarre ending to the 2-1 loss.  With the bases loaded, catcher Ray Schalk stopped reliever Dave Danforth mid-windup and that resulted in the go ahead run scored on a balk.
The White Sox not only lost back to back games for the first time this year, but it was also the first time they’d been shutout as well.  The hitters were held to just seven hits and Nemo Liebold had three of them, all singles.
The White Sox four game winning streak came to an end and it was Eddie Cicotte who lost his first game of the season in a 4-1 loss to the Indians.  Cicotte gave up four runs in six innings.

 1919 Black Sox Scandal
Still, in present day, nearly 80 years after the fact, baseball fans talk about the Black Sox scandal with a lowered voice and an embarrassed look in their eyes.
While seven of the eight "Black Sox" went so far as confessing, one player seemed to be relatively innocent -- "Shoeless" Joe Jackson.
The Black Sox scandal of 1919 started out as a few gamblers trying to get rich, and turned into one of the biggest, and easily the darkest, event in baseball history.

 The Chicago Black Sox Trial
Charles Comiskey's 1919 Chicago White Sox team had plenty to complain about.
Together they formed the best team in baseball--perhaps one of the best teams that ever played the game--, yet they were paid a fraction of what many players on other teams received.
Comiskey's contributions to baseball were beyond question, but he was both a tightwad and a tyrant.

Black Sox Blog » Frank Thomas
Black Sox Blog favorite Joe Crede is having a pretty rough spring.  In seventeen at bats, he has two hits and he’s driven in only one run.
Now White Sox GM Kenny Williams raised the bar by calling Frank Thomas an idiot.  Thomas hasn’t seemed to want to let it go, and Williams almost to appears to have snapped.  You’d expect more from a GM, but I’m not really familiary with Williams temperment.
Chris Widger, the Sox backup catcher, agreed to terms with the Sox.

 The 1919 Black Sox -- | BaseballLibrary.com
The 1919 Chicago White Sox were one of the greatest teams of their era.
The 1920 season got underway and the White Sox were driving hard to their second straight pennant when a petty gambler in Philadelphia broke the news that a Cubs-Phillies game had been fixed in 1919.
It is still with us because of the lingering sense that justice miscarried, that the ignorant were duped by the clever, that the powerless suffered and the strong prevailed, that Jackson and the others were scapegoats, victims who were caught at a crossroads time in baseball and American history.
