Great Black Swamp - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Its historical boundaries lie primarily within the watershed of the Maumee River and stretched roughly from New Haven, Indiana in the west to near Sandusky, Ohio to the east.
Although much of the area to the east and north was settled in the early 1800s, the difficulty of traveling through the swamp delayed its development by several decades.
In the 1850s an organized attempt to drain the swamp for agricultural use and ease of travel began, and the area was largely settled over the next three decades.

A swamp is a wetland that features permanent inundation of large areas of land by shallow bodies of water, generally with a substantial number of hummocks, or dry-land protrusions.
In the USA, swamps are usually regarded as including a large amount of woody vegetation, but elsewhere this may not necessarily apply, such as in African swamps dominated by papyrus.
Swamps are generally characterized by very slow-moving waters, often rich in tannins from decaying vegetation.

Some of the carnivores in the swamp are the Alligator, the Crocodile, the Caiman, the Anaconda, the Water Mocassin, the Pitcher Plant, and the Bladder Wort.
Southeastern US Many carnivorous plants are also found in the swamps, usually in areas where the soil is not as fertile such as the everglades, so they have to get their nutrients from insects.
Some common plants, or autotrophs, of the swamp are the Bald Cypress, the Pond Cypress, the Water Tupelo, epiphytes such as the Cardinal Air plant or Spanish Moss, the Skunk Cabbage, Willows, Cattails, Wild Rice, and Cranberries.

 Great Black Swamp Information
The Great Black Swamp, or simply Black Swamp, was a glacially-caused wetland in northwest Ohio and northeast Indiana, that existed from the end of the Wisconsin glaciation until the late 19th century.
It was comprised of extensive swamps and marshes, with some higher, drier ground interspersed, and occupied what was formerly the southwestern part of Glacial Lake Maumee, a holocene precursor to Lake Erie.
The impassability of the swamp became an obstacle during the Toledo War (1835-36), with Michigan militia members becoming lost and unable to confront Ohio forces armed for battle.

It was the Great Black Swamp, an oozing mass of water, mud, snakes, wolves, wildcats, biting flies, and clouds of gnats and mosquitoes.
Much of the swamp was covered with an almost impenetrable forest of giant oak, sycamore, hickory, walnut, ash, elm, maple and cottonwood trees, except in a few prairie areas where limestone just under the surface would not support timber growth.
The Black Swamp was Ohio's last frontier, and beginning in the 1840s, it took several generations of determined farmers to drain it and make it the rich, flat farmland of today.

The earliest settlers called the area the Great Black Swamp, because the area consisted of a thick tangle of swampy forests and expansive wetlands of thick brush and/or tall marsh grasses and tules.
Soon, "progress" prevailed, a large logging industry was developed for the oak timber and in time, the formidable Black Swamp cleared, then drained and farmers and farm fields replaced the Indians and forests; eagles and panthers were replaced with flbirds.
The foreboding marshes and timbered wetlands of the Great Black Swamp were reduced from 300,000 acres to 15,000 acres.

 Black Swamp - Day 7 - Hollyford-Pyke Route - Long-Distance Walks with Mark Moxon
It stank of rotting vegetation; it was, indeed, a very fl, swampy area, dotted with odd tussocks of vegetation with strange grassy growths appearing out of the top; and it was waist deep in gooey, quicksand-like mud, as both Rick and I found out as we waded through it.
We had started out by trying to hop from clump to clump, but this turned out to be pretty hopeless with the combination of heavy backpack and unstable vegetation, and by the end of the swamp, which can only have been about 200m wide, we were filthy, soaked, and, frankly, having a ball.
After the Black Swamp we miraculously managed to keep to the markers, despite large numbers of washouts.
