Black Thought - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Black Thought (born Tariq Trotter) is the lead MC of the Philadelphia-based hip hop group The Roots.
Thought, who co-founded The Roots with drummer ?uestlove (Ahmir Thompson), is widely considered one of the most underrated MCs of all time.
Black Thought and ?uestlove are credited by many modern-day movementarians in diverse communities throughout the United States with their ability to infuse a sense of integrity and self-dignity in the way young people see themselves.

 Tony Isabella: Black Thought
Black Lightning’s debut series, written by Isabella, only made it to issue #11 before it fell prey to massive cutbacks in 1978.
Black Lightning could be a dream come true for the industry, but DC never promotes the property.
I thought and hoped my Black Lightning would be as much of a pioneer as those characters, as much of an inspiration to young readers as those characters had been for the kids of my and earlier generations.

Patricia Hill Collins - Black Feminist Thought
Black women scholars were in a position to see the exclusion of African-American women from scholarly discourse, and the thematic content of their work often reflected their interest in examining a Black women's standpoint.
The dilemma facing Black women scholars engaged in creating Black feminist thought is that a knowledge claim that meets the criteria of adequacy for one group and thus is judged to be an acceptable knowledge claim may not be translatable into the terms of a different group.
A Black women's standpoint may provide a preferred stance from which to view the matrix of domination because, in principle, Black feminist thought as specialized thought is less likely than the specialized knowledge produced by dominant groups to deny the connection between ideas and the vested interests of their creators.

Harvard Gazette: Michael Dawson explores black political thought, now and then
Joining fl liberalism were fl Marxism, the very powerful force of fl nationalism, the early rumblings of fl feminism, and even a small but growing fl conservative movement.
Historically, he says, fl civil society has rolled economic, social, political, and religious functions together, largely because of the prominence of the fl church in African-American society since the 19th century.
As fl churches and civil rights organizations see their membership aging and shrinking, other community-based groups, state or local government forces like the police, or new Christian denominations may be filling the void.

Patricia Hill Collins - Black Feminist Thought   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Black women's experiences as bloodmothers, othermothers, and community othermothers reveal that the mythical norm of a heterosexual, married couple, nuclear family with a nonworking spouse and a husband earning a "family wage" is far from being natural, universal and preferred but instead is deeply embedded in specific race and class formations.
Black women's actions in the struggle or group survival suggest a vision of community that stands in opposition to that extant in the dominant culture.
Black feminist thought that rearticulates experiences such as these fosters an enhanced theoretical understanding of how race, gender, and class oppression are part of a single, historically created system.

Many fl conservative dissenters criticize me based upon their perception that I am overly consumed with what white folks are doing and thinking and not enough about what fl folks are doing and thinking.
One of the consequences of years of discrimination against fls is that fl people don’t have faith in the “process” to the degree that white folks do and for good reason.

grhf: women of color: feminisms: Collins - Defining Black Feminist Thought   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Black women intellectuals thus stand in a special relationship to the community of African-American women of which we are a part, and this special relationship frames the contours of Black feminist thought.
I aim to develop a definition of Black feminist thought that relies exclusively neither on a materialist analysis--one whereby all African-American women by virtue of biology become automatically registered as "authentic Black feminists"-nor on an idealist analysis whereby the background, worldview, and interests of the thinker are deemed irrelevant in assessing his or her ideas.
Black women intellectuals who articulate an autonomous, self-defined standpoint are in a position to examine the usefulness of coalitions with other groups, both scholarly and activist, in order to develop new models for social change.

 BLACK HOLES by Ted Bunn
We suspect that most of the fl holes that are actually out there were produced in the deaths of massive stars, and so we expect those fl holes to weigh about as much as a massive star.
If you were falling into a smaller fl hole, say one that weighed as much as the Sun, tidal forces would start to make you quite uncomfortable when you were about 6000 kilometers away from the center, and you would have been torn apart by them long before you crossed the horizon.
Since a fl hole is a region of space from which nothing can escape, the time-reversed version of a fl hole is a region of space into which nothing can fall.

 Fighting Words
Contrasting social theories that support unjust power relations of race, class, gender, and nation with those that challenge inequalities, Collins investigates why some ideas are granted the status of "theory" while others remain "thought." "It is not that elites produce theory while everyone else produces mere thought," she writes.
By using accessible/inclusive language and drawing on many schools of intellectual thought, she informs and educates across disciplines a unique characteristic in academia.
She considers whether recent theories of Black women as having 'intersectional' positions is a better conceptualization of the specific standpoint of Black women.

White thought, black thought (Metro Times Detroit)
Hartigan is a good storyteller here, and a clear analyst of how local residents, fl and white, make sense of race as it affects their lives and their sometimes desperate attempts to make do in this impoverished bit of the city.
Although Hartigan pulls out some good historical material on how the term "hillbilly" was used in Briggs around World War II – both to police the behavior of rural whites and to keep color lines sharply distinct – his most powerful cases are contemporary, because they explore a living, active process.
Similarly, after a fight (and name-calling) breaks out between members of one hillbilly family and several fl residents, the incident gets told and retold among the family for weeks, in an obsessive attempt to figure out whether "all that fl and white shit" was real (that is, did someone in the family do something disrespectful).
