Great Torrington (generally abbreviated to Torrington, though it should be noted that the villages of Little Torrington and Black Torrington are situated in the same region) is a small market town in the north of Devon, England.
Torrington is in the very heart of Tarka Country, a landscape captured by Henry Williamson in his novel Tarka the Otter in 1927.
Torrington was visited by the plague in 1591, and in the 17th century it was the scene of some of the important actions of the civil war.

 Torrington
Torrington (distinguished from Little Torrington and Black Torrington by the epithet Great) is a municipal borough and market-town in the hundred of Fremington, about thirty-six miles from Exeter, by Crediton, Chulmleigh, and Cranford Moor.
The principal manufacture carried on in Torrington and the country round is that of gloves ; this branch of industry was in 1834 in a very flourishing state.
The living of Torrington is a vicarage, united with the perpetual curacy of the neighbouring parish of St. Giles in the Wood : their joint yearly value is £162 : they are in the gift of Christ Church College, Oxford.

It was made in 1791 in London by John Avery, probably for a private house.
It came to Black Torrington from Berrow church in Somerset, having previously been in the Parish Church of Brent Knoll, Somerset.
It was restored in 1987 by William Drake with the help of grants from the Pilgrim Trust, the Leche Trust and the Northcott Foundation.

The Town of Torrington is the first station in Wyoming on the Bridgeport and Guernsey branch of the C.B. and Q railroad, and is located on the north bank of the North Platte River.
Not only was Torrington a town offering folks a "mail" station and basic needs for life and survival, but it was a cow town where cattle by the thousands were loaded aboard trains for shipment to the nation's markets.

Great Torrington (generally abbreviated to Torrington though it should be noted that villages of Little Torrington and Black Torrington situated in the same region) is a market town in the north of Devon in England.
In the Battle of Torrington (1646) the Parliamentarians led by Sir Thomas Fairfax swept into the town and defeated Hopton's forces.
Today the town is recognised as important heritage centre for the history of 17th century and its people can often be dressed in costume for historical re-enactments festivals and celebrations.
