The French colony of Upper Volta was established on March 1, 1919 with its current boundaries from what had been administered as part of Côte d'Ivoire colony.
However, on September 5, 1932, Upper Volta was broken apart, with parts being administered by the colonies of Côte d’Ivoire, French Sudan (present day Mali), and Niger.
The colony was revived with the previous boundaries on September 4, 1947.

VOLTA, the largest river of the coast of Upper Guinea, between the Gambia and the Niger, with a length of about 900 m.
From the eleventh to the ninth parallel the river forms the boundary between the Northern Territories of the Gold Coast (British) and the French Ivory Coast colony.
The lower Volta was explored by M. Bonnat in 1875, but the upper basin was first traversed by the German traveller G. Krause (188687) and the French captain L. Binger (1888).

Burkina Faso, formerly Upper Volta, republic in western Africa, bounded on the north and west by Mali, on the east by Niger, and on the south by Benin, Togo, Ghana, and Côte d'Ivoire.
Burkina Faso is located on a plateau sloping generally to the south and situated from about 200 to 700 m (about 650 to 2300 ft) in elevation.
The plateau is drained to the south by the Black Volta (Mouhoun), Red Volta (Nazinon), and White Volta (Nakanbe) rivers and to the east by small rivers connecting with the Niger; none are navigable.
