Woodpeckers gained their English name because of the habit of some species of tapping and pecking noisily on tree trunks with their beaks.
Woodpeckers cause property damage by drilling holes in wood and synthetic stucco siding and eaves, and are an annoyance when hammering or "drumming" on houses.
Woodpecker damage can be prevented or eliminated with several techniques including visual repellents, loud noises, exclusion, alternate construction materials, providing nesting boxes, and as a last resort, killing.

So this study was carried out to understand the ecology of sympatric woodpeckers to determine their resource utilization patterns (foraging behaviour, nest sites and habitat requirements), their densities in natural forests and plantations and thereby draw up strategies for conservation of woodpeckers and management of their habitats.
Woodpeckers differed, statistically, from one another in several foraging parameters: foraging behaviour, substrate size, diameter at breast height of the foraging tree, tree height and foraging height.
The densities of woodpeckers were lower in tropics in comparison to the temperate regions and therefore larger areas need to be set aside for conserving ecologically functional populations of woodpeckers.

Black-backed Woodpeckers occur from New England and eastern Canada, across Canada to southern Alaska and south in the Rocky Mountains to Wyoming.
The Black-backed Woodpecker is found in association with subalpine fir/ Engelman spruce in higher elevations, and ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir and lodgepole pine forests at lower elevations (Jackman 1974, Short 1982).
It is important to recognize though, that large-scale disturbances may be more important in maintaining their populations now, then in historical times, due to the reduction of all old-growth forests and the increase in "salvage" logging techniques which remove dying, and recently killed, trees throughout North America.

Santharam¹ The Indian Great Black Woodpecker (Dryocopus javensis) is the second largest woodpecker in the Indian subcontinent and the largest in the Western Ghats.
Nesting season lasts from December to May. Sites with Great Black woodpeckers were significantly different from those that did not have the birds in having larger-sized trees both in terms of height and DBH values.
The conservation implications based on the present findings are that large, dead/dying trees are essential for the survival of the woodpecker and that large stretches of forest areas have to be set aside for its conservation.
