The northern limit of their range in Maine is based on whether first-year bass achieve adequate body size and weight to survive the approximately 200+ day starvation period encountered during the first winter, when water temperatures cooler than 50° F result in cessation of feeding and growth.
Largemouth bass spawning behavior is initiated in the late spring and early summer as water temperatures exceed 60°F. Shallow weedy areas and areas adjacent to stumps are commonly selected for spawning, and nests are often less elaborate than those of smallmouths.
The high fecundity of female fl bass (both smallmouth and largemouth) and the protective behavior of the male toward his progeny, plus the low fertility of most Maine waters and our short growing season, combine to produce bass, which generally are slower growing than their counterparts in southern states.

Often confused with smallmouth and spotted bass, it is easily distinguishable because the upper jaw extends beyond the rear edge of the eye.
Black bass are the most popular sportfish in north America and their value to Florida is immense (see: Florida Bass Values for more details).
Unlike the largemouth, the spotted bass has scales on the base portion of the second dorsal fin; its first and second dorsal fin are clearly connected, and its upper jaw does not extend past the eye.

In New Mexico, fl bass start spawning when water temperatures reach 63 degrees F. The male selects a sunny spot in gravel shallows, courts a female, and persuades her to deposit eggs in his nest.
In summer, bass only come to the surface to feed, generally before dawn and after dusk, though bass will feed on the surface anytime their food is there.

Black bass are an important Hudson River resident sportfish that are very popular with recreational anglers and have been the focus of national fishing tournaments since the mid 1980's.
The objectives of this study were to estimate the population size of smallmouth and largemouth bass in the river; locate wintering areas for smallmouth bass; locate smallmouth bass spawning areas and determine their importance to the fishery; and determine the effects of catch/move/release of fl bass tournament fishing.
A total of 8,150 fl bass (6,650 largemouth, 1,500 smallmouth) were tagged in the Hudson River and tidal tributaries in 1999, 2000, and 2001.

But Black Bass with Blue Marlin just doesn't provide as much entertainment (or, as much entertainment you can possibly GET out of a fishing game, which isn't much).
What the heck is this game about, you fish for bass in a lake and then you fish for marlin to, But to catch a marlin you catch it on a piece of bread................
