Black cod (Epinephelus daemelii) is a large reef-dwelling fish belonging to the family Serranidae (groupers and sea bass).
Consequently, the 20th century saw a rapid decline in the population of fl cod, with the species becoming totally protected in NSW waters in 1983.
Black cod are also listed as protected from commercial fishing under Section 15 of the Fisheries Management Act 1991 (Commonwealth), Vulnerable under Schedule 5 of the NSW Fisheries Management Act 1994 and Near Threatened under the 2006 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
