  The Black Legend
There seems to have been an allure to the claim that many conversos secretly practiced their old Jewish faith and, as such, were undermining the Faith.
For centuries, such legends would persist in Spain, though most evidence shows that there were few "secret" Judaizers and that most conversos, particularly after the first generation of forced conversions, were faithful Catholics.
Spaniards and Hispanophiles have termed this process and the image that resulted from it as ‘The Black Legend,’ la leyenda negra." It is this post-Reformation anti-Catholic "fl legend" that created the myths surrounding the Spanish Inquisition.

  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Black Legend
The Black Legend (Spanish: La Leyenda Negra) is the depiction of Spain and Spaniards as bloodthirsty and cruel, intolerant, greedy and fanatical.
The Black Legend is evident in works by early Protestant historians describing the period of dominant Spanish imperialism; many also see its influences, including the Inquisition myth, in the villains and storylines of modern fiction and film.
Traditionally, the Black Legend has been used by the left and the nationalists of non-Castilian regions as a political weapon against the central government or Spanish nationalism, which the conservative parties have countered with the White Legend.

 Kids.Net.Au - Encyclopedia > Black legend
The Black Legend (in Spanish, leyenda negra) is the claim that Spain and the Spaniards were depicted as uniquely bloodthirsty, cruel, greedy and licentious, in excess of reality.
In 1552, the Dominican friar Bartolome de las Casas published "Short Account of the Destruction of the West Indies[?]" (Brevísima relación de la destrucción de las Indias), an exaggerated account of the excesses happening during colonization of Hispaniola, in which he argued against the enslaving of American Indians[?], proposing that African Negroes[?] be carried instead.
This legend stemmed from a variety of sources, and by the early 18th century most of Europe had applied this stereotype to the Spaniards.

To avoid causing offense the Seville Expo '92 (during a PSOE Government) celebrated the 500th aniversary of the discovery of America, as the beginning of the Age of Discovery, and not of colonization or conquest.

The Black Legend against Spain is part of a vast movement started by the enemies of the Faith to destroy the Catholic religion.
The Black Legend was fanned largely by Protestant and liberal ideology and, particularly in the twentieth century, the Marxist re-interpretation of history.
One of the main components in the arsenal of the Black Legend is the alleged extermination and enslavement of the native Indians in the Americas.

 Black Legend
The “Black Legend” was a concept contrived by Anglo-Saxons in an attempt to shed a gloomy falsified conception on their colonial competition, the Spanish.
The “Black Legend” inferred that the Spanish were no more than brutish tyrants to the natives of the New World who forced them to endure torture, rape, pillages, genocide, and nothing the kinder.
Therefore, in the case of the “Black Legend” it is inappropriate for such claims to be made.

The Myth of the Spanish Inquisition
The Inquisition Myth, which Spaniards call "The Black Legend," did not arise in 1480.
It began almost 100 years later, and exactly one year after the Protestant defeat at the Battle of Mühlberg at the hands of Ferdinand's grandson, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. In 1567 a fierce propaganda campaign began with the publication of a Protestant leaflet penned by a supposed Inquisition victim named Montanus.
One facet of the Black Legend that evaporates under scrutiny in this film is the rumor that Philip II, son of Charles V, killed his son Don Carlos on the advisement of the aging blind Grand Inquisitor.
