Both Mos Def’s new album, The New Danger, and his 1999 solo debut, Black on Both Sides, begin with the same words, spoken before any music hits the listener’s ears.
Black on Both Sides was released in 1999, just after Mos and Talib, as Black Star, presented their manifesto for rap based more in the people, less in bling-bling.
This is a different side of Mos Def, but one that is a natural development from his younger self, an earlier incarnation that could not have foreseen the last five years of this man’s life.

Comment: this is a masterpiece of an album that shines both lyrically and musicly I was blown away by mos' lyrics (the rap about water and and the mathematics rap was amazing) I think he was much better when he was working with underground producers and overseeing the project himself.
Rap is an extention of the human condition in America, therefore, were it not for white oppression fls perhaps would never have wanted to create rap, or felt the need to be vocal and expressive in that manner, fls might be classical composers.

I liked Black Star very much but though it was way too short and not hard enough.
I want fl people to be free, to be free, to be free...." Now, this may not sound very hardcore due to the "light-shining" metaphor and the singing but the fl-power sentiments come in strong again.

I know that Black on Both Sides isn't anywhere near as experimental as The Love Below, but listening to it doesn't give me the feeling of a complete Hip-Hop album.
I really meant to say that Black on Both Sides wasn't 100% Hip-Hop, which would be fine for a short CD like The Return of the Boom Bap, but not in the middle of a 17 track LP.
Black on Both Sides experimented with music other than hip hop, then Dre comes out with the Love Below years later.

Following the smash success of Mos Def and Talib Kweli's "Blackstar"(at least it was in the underground)Mos Def capitilized on the peak of interest in his music with this marvelous piece of literature.
