Presently, as I understand the taxonomy of this complex, the above Australian bird (formerly Elanus notatus) has been split from E. caeruleus as E. axillaris and the common names in usage are several and may cause confusion overlapping in some cases with the common names used for E. caeruleus, i.e.
E. axillaris is probably better called Black-shouldered Kite or Australian Kite while reserving the common name of Black-winged Kite only to E. caeruleus.
