 kite (bird)
Kites are raptors with long wings and weak legs which spend a great deal of time soaring.
A few of the Perninae are also named as kites.
Together with less closely related groups such as New World vultures and Osprey, they make up the diurnal bird of prey order Falconiformes.

 Monfragüe,
Black Kite, left, is the most common raptor in Extremadura.
Here, the Egyptian Vultures were already on the wings, however outnumbered completely by Black Kite, which are everywhere.
The Black Stork, right, breeds with several pairs in Monfragüe, and can often be seen on it's nest, at quite close distance.

Black-winged Kite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This species was formerly referred to as the Black-shouldered Kite, but this name is now used for the Australian species, Elanus axillaris, at one time (along with the American White-tailed Kite E.
It has a white head with a black "mask", and white underparts except for black tips to its narrow falcon-like wings.

 Black-shouldered Kite - BIRD
The Black-shouldered Kite's close relative, the rare nocturnal Letter-winged Kite is not usually sighted far beyond the channels of the northern Lake Eyre Basin.
Black-shoulderd Kites have been reported from all parts of mainland Australia, but are most common in the south and east, in the south-west corner of Western Australia, and in the far north-west.
The Black-shouldered Kite was formerly classified as the Australian race of a single near-worldwide species, found in Europe, Africa, and North America as well as Australia.

In addition, resident species such as bustards, sandgrouse, Black-winged Kite and Black Wheatear are sometimes better seen in winter than at other times, though locating one of the conditions often also permits the occasional overwintering of species which are usually trans-Saharan migrants,e.g.
South-bound migration begins with Great Spotted Cuckoo which is often difficult to find by the end of June, while the mass exodus of White stork takes place in July, and raptor movements start at the end of the month with Black Kite migration from and through the area.
Little Bittern, Egyptian Vulture, Black Kite, Booted Eagle and Wryneck, and an open mind should be kept, as almost anything could appear completely out of “season”.

 BIRDCHAT archives -- June 1995, week 5 (#14)
In some ways similar to our Black-shouldered Kite: if the bird is sitting, there's very little difference between the two, the Letter-winged Kite having a small black patch behind the eye.
It's when they're flying that the obvious difference comes into play: the Black-shouldered Kite has a roundish black patch on the underwing whilst the Letter-winged Kite has a large black bar across the underwing (M or W shape and hence the name Letter-winged Kite).
There are four kites in the Genus elanus in the world, and Australia has two: 1 Black-shouldered Kite (or Australian Black-shouldered Kite, but never "Australian Kite") For a long time this was Elanus notatus (Gould 1838) however a 1994 taxonomic revision of Australian birds changed this to Elanus axillaris (due to Latham 1801 preceding).

A distinctive line above the eyes makes it look as if it is wearing dark sunglasses from a distance.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Animals in the Bible
Of the fabulous dragon fancied by the ancients, represented as a monstrous winged serpent, with a crested head and enormous claws, and regarded as very powerful and ferocious, no mention whatever is to be found in the Bible.
The goats are for the most part black, the sheep white, dappled or piebald, forming a very marked contrast.
a monster begotten from a lion and an eagle, and characterized by the beak, neck, and wings of an eagle and the legs and rump of a lion, is based only on a misinterpretation of the word.

Black-winged Kite Having read many recent trip reports where birders were unsuccessful with this species, we were extremely pleased to be successful at our first attempt on the evening of 9th at the Monroe site (Muddeman Area 11 site 10).
Black Kite Between 20 and 50 a day for the first few days, than much reduced numbers as we moved further east.
For our last day we stayed in the Cuatro Caminos at Calera y Chozas (0034) 925846174, a large, slightly grubby, noisy village but the accommodation was very modern and the food OK once we’d got over the concept of not having a menu.

Black-winged Kites are not at risk in Singapore as they benefit from the open habitats created by human interference: parks, reclaimed land, green corridors.
They prefer hunting sites with good perches and a favourite perch may be used daily.Black-winged Kites are found in open country like back mangroves, grasslands and oil-palm plantations.

Elanus scriptus, the letter-winged kite, is found in the interior of Australia in savanna areas, and along watercourses.
Between 1981 and 1994, all Elanus kites were grouped together under the name black-shouldered kite or Elanus caeruleus.
It is early in the season yet for 2004, but four young kites have been successfully fledged from the first East nest and three from the West nest.

Donana Bird Tours - TRIP REPORTS
A Black Kites' nest provided good viewing and we watched a young chick trying to tear flesh off of a dead rabbit that had been deposited on the side of the nest by one of the parents.
The first site visited was the "egrets' roost", where Black Kites, an Osprey, Ravens, Iberian Magpies, Woodchat Shrikes, Crested Larks, Corn Buntings and Helmeted Guinea Fowl were seen.
At the extreme end of the Corredor Verde site we watched a female Black-shouldered Kite feeding two chicks in their nest whilst the male was observed nearby, hunting.

November-December 2000, up to three White-winged Terns Chlidonias leucopterus were wintering together with some Black Terns C niger at Den Oever, Noord-Holland, the Netherlands; the late stay of White-winged Terns (the last reported sighting was on 1 January 2001) is exceptional for the Netherlands.
Both Dutch birds were identified as adult, and as belonging to the nominate subspecies, based on their grey forehead and whitish underparts and underwing primaries.

PCDDs, PCDFs, and Dioxin-like PCBs in Humans and Wildlife: Samples from India Sep01
Concentrations of PCDDs/DFs in the muscle of spotted owlet were the highest (430 pg/g fat wt) followed in decreasing order by prairie kite (370 pg/g fat wt), osprey (350 pg/g fat wt), black-winged kite (160 pg/g fat wt) and eagle (43 pg/g fat wt) (Table 1).
Greater concentrations of dioxin-like PCBs have been noticed in osprey, prairie kite, black-winged kite, spotted owlet and eagle muscle.
Greater than 95% of the concentrations of dioxin-like PCBs were contributed by mono- ortho congeners in dolphins.
