So she researched hip-hop and teen magazines, joined the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists, and wrote a business plan for Blackgirl, an entertainment, lifestyle and history magazine aimed at 12- to 15-year-olds.
Using $1,200 in profits from another venture, a cake-baking business, James launched the first issue of Blackgirl in the summer of 2001.
All 3,000 copies of the first issue - which featured interviews with musicians OutKast, Jill Scott and Lil' Bow Wow - sold out, and it's now a bimonthly publication with 5,000 subscribers.
