The Black-headed Munia (Nun) is one of the five Munias that have been recorded on Campus.
The latest addition to the check-list of Tambaram birds (Scientific Report No. 2, Dept. of Statistics, February 1971) is the Nun ( Lonchura malacca) which is also known as the Black-headed Munia or the Chestnut Mannikin.
It is a handsome little bird, smaller than the House Sparrow, has a black head, chestnut (same colour as the female Paradise Flycatcher) wings and white lower plumage with some black.

 The White-headed Munia
The young, like many mannikins, are a dusky brown color and are indistinguishable from the young of Black-headed and Tri-color munias.
Breeding success with the White-headed munia has been sporadic with most breeders and like so many of the imported mannikins, they are readily available for a reasonable price so people do not attempt to work with them.
In the wild, seeding grass heads may be the trigger for breeding, so the aviculturist may do well to provide sprouted seeds and greens to entice them to breed.

 birdwatching trip report - Cambodia - surfbirds.com
Headed south to the town of Skuon where we left our guide Polin who made his way back to Phnom Penh and we continued in the car to Kompong Chan where we checked into the Mekong Hotel on the edge of the river.
Checked into a small hotel located on the edge of town just as you entered town from the north by a small lake where we were made to feel very welcome and we enjoyed a great meal before retiring.
At $60 a head for the day it was a bit steep especially as you had to have a minimum of 4 people but they knew the best sites for the birds.

India's Black Market in Birds Threatening Rare Species
Most of the birds traded were parakeets and munias, especially the rose-ringed parakeet ( Psittacula krameri), the black-headed munia ( Lonchura Malacca) and the red munia ( Estrilda amandava).
In one of the largest recent incidents illustrating the huge scale of this flourishing black market, more than 10,000 birds were confiscated at the Mumbai (formerly called Bombay) international airport in March 2001.
He also discovered that some important protected species like the horned owl were hunted for black magic rituals and sorcery, such as the practice of certain tribes that use the owls to purify "amulets" during their street performances.

Birdwatching trip report - Sri Lanka - surfbirds.com
This stop proved to be very rewarding as we added Sri Lanka White-eye, Black-throated Munia and Hill Swallow to our lists as well as excellent views of chocolate cake!
One stop was particularly memorable however, with excellent views of several raptors: Oriental Honey-buzzard, Black-shouldered and Brahminy Kites, Crested Serpent-eagle, Shikra and best of all, Black Eagle.
Other good birds included Greater Flameback (of the red-backed race), Scarlet Minivet, Black and Yellow-browed Bulbuls, Large-billed Leaf-warbler, Tickell's Blue-flycatcher, Brown-breasted Flycatcher, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, Southern Hill Myna and frustrating flight views of an Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher for a few.

 BENGALESE FAQ's
Yes Lonchura stygia (Black Mannikin) seems a very likely candidate for inclusion in the history of the development of these birds, but for my money look at Lonchura fuscans (Dusky Munia)a much more likely candidate for the role.
As far as recorded history of the development of today’s “modern mutations” which I assume to be the birds that have originated in Continental Europe, is concerned only two species are indicated as playing a part and these are: Lonchura maja The White-headed Munia were Fred Panjer tells us..
These are almost certainly L.bicolor the Black & White Mannikin, many dealers call them Blue Billed.

Feathered Flyer - White-headed Munia (Lonchura maja)
When I bought my first pair of White-headed Munias they were called Maja Finches a name not heard now, most dealers and pet shops call them Nuns a term commonly used in the USA for these birds.
A general description of these birds would be, Chocolate-brown, lightest on the back and wings, richest on the tail, and darkest on the underneath, the under-tail coverts and centre of the belly being almost black.
The head colour starts of buffish in first year birds and as each moult passes gets lighter until it is almost white.

The common birds which are not easy to see in most places but which are findable during a visit to the cemetery include barred button quail, slaty-breasted rail, blue throated bee-eater, baya weaver, rufescent prinia, Richard's pipit and three species of munia -scaly breasted, white headed and black headed.
The three munia species can sometimes be seen together in the long grasses.
I guess that in the northern winter other species will appear and I'm sure a more diligent search or maybe a search by a more diligent person would discover other species.

I was only there for a short time so my chances to see much were limited, but I found the amount of development had impinged on what were probably green areas a couple of decades ago.
