  Blackbear Bosin
The "Keeper of the Plains," a dramatic 44-foot tall steel sculpture of an American Indian, was donated to the city by its creator, Blackbear Bosin.
Born of Kiowa-Comanche heritage in Anadarko, Oklahoma in 1921, Bosin came to his adopted city of Wichita in 1940.
By the time of his death in 1980 at the age of 59, the inventiveness and imagination reflected in his paintings had earned Blackbear Bosin a prominent place among American artists.

 Mid-America All Indian Center - Artists - Blackbear Bosin (1921-1980)
Born to a Kiowa father and a Comanche mother on June 5, 1921, in Anadarko, Oklahoma, Blackbear Bosin became an internationally recognized artist.
Blackbear Bosin used several media in his works but kept coming back to his favorite one, an opaque tempera called gouache, although he experimented in acrylic paints in his later years, enjoying the challenges of a completely alien medium.
Blackbear Bosin's works became recognized as the utmost in his field and placed him among the leaders of American Indian painters.

 KU anthropology museum opens Blackbear Bosin exhibit
On loan to the museum for this special exhibit are five Blackbear Bosin gouache paintings from the Brown's private collection.
Bosin's paintings, depicting tribal lore and customs, are instantly recognizable by their brilliant colors.
Of special note is the painting titled "Blackbear and Sun Eagle" which illustrates the bond of brotherhood between Bosin and Britt Brown and is accompanied by Bosin's eloquent description of his theme and characters.

While I was researching information for my children regarding their grandfather, Blackbear Bosin, I came across a letter to the editor (originally published April 7).
I was Blackbear's daughter-in-law and mother of two of his grandchildren.
Blackbear had four children (Francis, Jr., Rena, Pat, and Niles), two daughters and two sons.

Bosin was born Francis Blackbear Bosin near Anadarko, Oklahoma, and was known as “Frank” until he became a well-known artist.
Fortunately, Bosin attended a school where five Kiowa artists, now known as the Kiowa Five, began their own style of painting based on Indian history and customs.
Place Symbols: Blackbear Bosin’s 44-foot-tall steel sculpture titled Keeper of the Plains, dedicated in 1974, has become a widely recognized symbol of Wichita and Sedgwick County.

One of the best at doing both is Blackbear Bosin, the foremost of American Indian painters.

The Mid-America All-Indian Center facility was completed in 1976 and is located at 650 N. Seneca.
Standing on the confluence of the Big and Little Arkansas Rivers, this 44-foot steel sculpture of an Indian warrior was created by Indian artist Blackbear Bosin of Wichita.
Construction of the sculpture was by Tom Washburn, Architectural Metal Products, Inc. The sculpture, erected in May 1974, was completely cut, welded and assembled in the shop and moved in one piece to the location.

In turn, the affiliation was approved by Tlalnepantla on February 3, 1974.
In February of 1975, a replica of Blackbear Bosin's Keeper of the Plains was presented to the city of Tlalnepantla, and is now stands in "Wichita Plaza".
The highlight of the Wichita-Tlalnepantla relationship had been from the very beginning, the public high school student exchanges in cooperation with the Sister Cities Advisory Board and the Wichita Public School System.

Wichita's Sister City relationship with Cancun dates from November 25, 1975, when the Wichita City Commission approved the affiliation.
A year later, a replica of Blackbear Bosin's Keeper of the Plains was installed in Cancun and on September 27, 1978, a replica of the Mayan Rain God, Chac, a gift from Cancun, was placed at the Mid-America All-Indian Center.
Following this, medical supplies were sent to Cancun through the collective efforts of the Wichita Red Cross, Wesley Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital.
