A total of 36 sites were established in and adjacent to Blackbraes National Park (Queensland) in collaboration with QPWS staff, and vertebrates and plants were sampled.
This newly created park was a pastoral lease and is currently being destocked, presenting an opportunity to monitor changes to the fauna and flora when grazing pressure is removed.

 Moonstone
Since that time, Moonstone Hill, which is surrounded by the Blackbraes National Park, has become a small multiple-use Resources Reserve.This Reserve was gazetted in 1998 under the Nature Conservation Act 1992, under the joint trusteeship of the Director-General, Department of Environment and Heritage, and the Director-General, Department of Mines and Energy.
It should also be mentioned that fossicking at the Chudleigh Park peridot field that lies to the south also produces some specimens of moonstone that occurs together with the peridot and (occasionally) some sapphire.
The deposit of moonstone being described in this paper is located at Moonstone Hill, which is found 4 on the eastern side of the Kennedy Developmental Road, 16km north from Hughenden, and approximately 90 km south of The Lynd, which is situated at the junction of the Gregory and Kennedy Developmental Roads (Map 1).

 a word of caution...
Our destination was the newly gazetted Blackbraes National Park, marked on the latest RACQ map 104km south of the Lynd on the Kennedy Developmental Road, approx.
On returning to Townsville we contacted the Qld Parks and Wildlife Service asking if signage could be provided at Hughenden and at the Lynd Junction and also information on the QPWS website.
We were travelling in a 4WD, carrying an extra 40L of fuel, 50L of water, food, camping gear, a satellite phone (no mobile coverage out here m'dears), a GPS and an E-perp in case of emergencies.

Further north of Porcupine Gorge is the Blackbraes National Parks, one of the newest national parks in the region and still relatively undeveloped but very interesting for its basalt rock features.
The Porcupine Gorge National Park, 63km north of Hughenden, has been nicknamed “Australia’s little Grand Canyon”, and offers camping, birdwatching, swimming, wonderful opportunities for nature and landscape photography and a diverse range of flora and fauna.

The park is enjoyed by many people, including a much used (even though sadly neglected) play area for children, and many of the residents from the nearby tower blocks look on the park as their garden.
People cheered the whole way through the rally in the park, where author and former cannabis smuggler Howard Marks, who spent ten years in an American prison for his efforts, was one of the speakers.
However I have since found out that if everything goes to according to South Lanarkshire Council's plans, then building on Blackbraes Rd field will actually start in January or February next year.
