PETER Thurnham's 13 years in Parliament have been distinguished by hard and devoted work for the Conservative Party and his constituency.
We find it easy to understand and sympathise with him about the fact that he was not even given the courtesy of an interview for the safe seat of Westmorland and Lonsdale.
Even if that is so, and opinion polls can be notoriously unreliable, it does not detract from the fact that in resigning Mr Thurnham has let down the people who voted for him at the last General Election.

By Dr Brian Iddon, Member of Parliament for Bolton South-east IT is a great privilege to serve a constituency as its Member of Parliament, and I thank 21,129 voters in the Bolton SE Parliamentary Constituency who supported me at the General Election on June 7.
However, I was disappointed that half the constituents eligible to vote did not exercise their right.
