Designed by Major F A Bumpus to meet a Fleet Air Arm requirement, the Blackburn B-5 Baffin torpedo bomber was a development of the Blackburn Ripon, the chief change being that a 545 hp Bristol Pegasus I.MS radial replaced the Ripon's Napier Lion water-cooled inline engine.
With the realisation of the threat posed by surface raiders, the RNZAF Baffin was returned to the active list, the survivors being merged in March 1940 as the NZ General Reconnaissance Squadron, renamed 1 GR Squadron in 1941 when half the strength was transferred to 3 GR Squadron.
The Baffins were replaced by Lockheed Hudsons before the outbreak of war with Japan; the last Baffins were broken up at Rongotai in 1941.

that it was inspired by the Heath Robinsonish appearance of the Blackburn Baffin aircraft.
BLACKBURN B-5 BAFFIN - The Blackburn Baffin was evolved under the direction of Major F A Bumpus in 1932 as a ver-sion of the earlier Ripon torpedo bomber, with a 545 hp Pegasus I.MS engine.
One theory is that it is a contraction of puffin, the bird; another that it was inspired by the Heath Robinsonish appearance of the Blackburn Baffin aircraft.

Sponsored by the Baffin Fetal Alcohol Network, the festival of performance and display arts was held to raise awareness about what happens to babies when mothers drink while they're pregnant.
Theresa Blackburn Chisolm and her daughter, Kristen, even created a display of complete and collapsed miniature inukshuks representing the whole and broken parts of society, a reality that occurs when babies are born disadvantaged and suffering from FAS/E. Materials and honoraria were offered to artists, but not all accepted that offer, Beddard said.

It seems that the Baffin was a derivative of the Blackburn Ripon, which had been a naval carrier-borne torpedo bomber.
Interestingly that Baffin, S1358, joined the RNZAF and became NZ164 with No. 2 (Wellington) Territorial Squadron, and in 1940 it was with the New Zealand General Reconnaissance Squadron at RNZAF Station Whenuapai.
For although the Rippon and Baffin were virtually identical except for their engine installation's, the lighter and neater radial engine of the latter was confidently expected to allow a higher degree of improvement than was achieved.

The prototype Blackburn Baffin two seat torpedo bomber was originally known as the Blackburn Ripon V and began replacing the earlier Ripons in Fleet Air Arm service from January 1934.
Only 29 Baffins were produced as new although at least 68 Ripons were upgraded to Baffin standard with a Bristol Pegasus air cooled radial engine.
However, as Baffin performance was only marginally better than that of the Ripon, it was in turn replaced in front line service from 1936 and only equipped three Fleet Air Arm squadrons.

Apparently an elderly naval officer (i.e.: aged over age thirty-two, see C. Graves Life Line 1941) used to be termed 'a Boffin' in the Royal Navy.
One solution that combines all these theories would be as follows: the use of "Boffin" by Dickens found its way into naval slang.
The Baffin plane, being a naval torpedo craft, perhaps took its variant name from the same naval tradition.
