Blackburn passed on the detail design and production of the Roc to Boulton Paul who was to supply the turrets for the Roc in any case.
Boulton's stated that all 136 Rocs should be completed by November 1939, although non had yet flown, and stated that the delays had been the result of waiting for modifications to the Skua to be approved before they could be implemented on the Roc.
The Rocs continued to operate over the channel and one is reproted as being shot down during an attack on a gun battery at Cap Blanc Nez on the 21st of June; Sqn Ldr A. M Day and his gunner F. Berry were both killed.

Blackburn Roc - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
First flying on 23 December 1938, the Roc's service life was brief as the aircraft's design was quickly rendered obsolete.
The Roc was a "fighter" development of the Blackburn Skua dive bomber using the same turret fighter concept as the Boulton Paul Defiant in that its sole armament was four 0.303 in (7.7 mm) machine guns in a powered dorsal turret.
Finally the Roc was relegated to training and target-towing roles until by 1943 it was withdrawn from service.

The Rocs were found to be slow and with poor stability their only good characteristics were they could maintain a steep dive with dive brakes.
In addition at least one Roc, Roc L3120 was sent to the RCAF for assessment, to the Roc Flight at Odiham for 110 squadron RCAF on 12 November 1940.
Only one Roc was reported to have been involved in combat between 1939-1945, this was when on 21 June 1940 a Roc flown by Sub Lt AVM Day and NA 1 F Berry from 801 squadron took part in an attack on a gunnery battery at Cap Blanc Nez, near Calais.

The Blackburn Roc may not be the all-time worst airplane used operationally by the Fleet Air Arm, but it certainly is in the running.
One Roc, sent to intercept a Heinkel He-60 seaplane used in the Channel for air rescue was incapable of catching even this slow biplane.
The last Rocs to go to sea served in 806 Squadron aboard HMS "Illustrious" during her shake-down cruise to the Bahamas, where they were off-loaded and left behind.

 Boulton Paul
Blackburn was far too busy with production of other aircraft to build them, and so Boulton Paul was subcontracted to manufacture the aircraft.
It was basically a Blackburn Skua dive-bomber fitted with a Boulton Paul type 'A' turret.
It had a ceiling of 32,500ft, was armed with a single.303 Browning machine gun, and had provision for two 60lb rockets under the wings.

The origin of the myth about the roc is unknown, and it is possible that the myth originated from an actual bird, with references to it being known from early as the 8th century from Middle-Eastern authors.
The roc is hardly different from the Middle-Eastern `anqa (see phoenix (mythology)); it is also identified with the Persian ''simurgh'', the bird which figures in Firdausi's epic as the foster-father of the hero Zal, father of Rustam.

The same Roc had a probable second Ju 88 kill on that mission, but nobody else was there to confirm it.
The Defiant and the Roc were both efforts to get long endurance fighter aircraft who could be airborne when threats--particularly reconnaissance threats--emerged and were the first steps in night fighters.
They were basically used in 1940 and by 1941, the Skuas and Rocs had been replaced by the Fulmar.

 Blackburn Roc
The Roc was designed to be fitted with a pair of floats of the same design as used by the earlier Blackburn Shark biplane.
The Roc carried only 117 gallons of fuel, this was provided by the same 39 gallon tank as the Skua in front of the cockpit but only a single, albeit slightly larger, tank of 78 gallons carried on the starboard side of the fuselage between the pilot and gunner.
To prove that Roc trainers also operated from carriers a photo in the Public Records Office shows a Roc target tug upended on the flight deck of the carrier HMS Formidable (reproduced in the book "The Fleet Air Arm in Camera 1912-1996" by Roger Hayward).

 Blackburn Roc
First production Rocs were left the silver finish of the Alclad covering, and red, white and blue cockades were painted on fuselage sides and above and below wings.
Sometimes red and blue cockades were outlined with a wide yellow ring, or red, white and blue rings were surrounded with a yellow ring.
Before the light blue undersides became standard for Fleet fighters, certain Rocs were painted light grey under the starboard wing and fl under the port.

 Modelling the Blackburn Roc
On the Skua and Roc the part of the door behind the Undercarriage leg was curved and the there was an extra bulge behind and above the wheel..
The area under the fuselage between the wing fillets is represented as a flat area; now this may well be correct, a hatch was added in the bottom of the Roc to allow an extra emergency exit route for the gunner.
The bad news is that the Roc has been removed from Pavlas web site and its mould may have been sacrificed to produce the new Skua model they released at the end of 2002.

 Blackburn Roc
This was in the timesin which bombers had nose and tail gunners, but rarely a gunner on the side.
The Blackburn Suka, a prior carrier bome dive bomber, also carried a heavy power turret, and the Roc was developed from it.
Performance was very poor, and it was doubted wether the Roc would be able to catch up with a bomber at all, let alone overtake one and shoot it down.

Remarks by Charles Mac Kay: "I believe that this photograph was taken at the Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment, Helensburgh, Scotland in 1940.
It shows the Roc fighter on floats outside the hanger.
The machine was an effort to provide the British navy with air cover when carriers were not available, shown in poor tactical handling of air cover in Norway, performance was lousy and depended very much on the weight of the pilot."

 Blackburn Skua
The Blackburn Skua was a fighter/dive-bomber used by the British Fleet Air Arm in the early years of World War II.
The Blackburn Roc did have this area redesigned as flat, also incorporating a ventral escape hatch for the gunner, but on the Skua it was a complicated profile where the curves of the round fuselage mated with the wing fillets.
The first prototype Skua had problems with stability and it and the second prototype (both known as Skua MK Is) had to be modified with a longer nose and upturned wingtips, features carried over to the production aircraft (known as Skua Mk IIs).
