  Blackdown Tableland National Park - EPA/QPWS
Rising abruptly above the surrounding dry plains, Blackdown Tableland protects spectacular sandstone scenery with gorges and waterfalls at the north-eastern edge of the central Queensland sandstone belt.
Woodlands, tall open forests and heath cover the tableland, providing a home for a variety of plants and animals, several found nowhere else, such as the Blackdown stringybark, a macrozamia, red bottlebrush, the Blackdown “monster” (a type of underground cricket), and a Christmas beetle.
Blackdown Tableland is about 2·5 hours’ drive west of Rockhampton via the Capricorn Highway.

Blackdown Tableland is an undulating plateau of 600-900 metres elevation with steep escarpments on most sides.
The Tableland is mainly open eucalypt forest with pockets of heath and fern communities on the eastern side where streams flow over waterfalls before entering the gorges.
The flora of Blackdown Tableland is so different from that of the surrounding lowland country and contains such a large number of endemic species that it is quite unique.

Still unknown from a lot of people, even from Australians, the Blackdown Tableland national park is part of the Capricorn region.
The Tableland is approximately 21/2 hours drive from Rockhampton (160 km.) along the Capricorn Highway.
The road that climb up to the Tableland is steep and winding but we will never forget all the wattles (mimosas) present all along the way.

 Walkabout - Duaringa
Some suggest that it may be the Aboriginal word for 'oak', others contend that it means the 'meeting place of the swampy oaks', and still others suggest that it means 'to turn oneself around'.
The central attraction in the Duaringa area (apart from the pub, which has some sections dating back to the 1880s) is the Blackdown Tableland to the south-west of the hamlet of Dingo.
The 23 000-hectare Blackdown Tableland National Park is characterised by waterfalls, dramatic cliffs, excellent bushwalks and Aboriginal rock art near the upper end of the Mimosa Creek.

We move from Carnarvon Gorge to Rockhampton via Blackdown Tableland National Park.
The most interesting part of Blackdown Tableland was the 4WD loop, a 30km track past weird sandstone outcroppings.
Many of the outcroppings had ferns growing in the cracks, and on the taller ones that you couldn't climb up there were orchids growing (the park brochure called them 'king orchids'.) Along the track, there were a couple of lookouts we stopped at, where we got one of those "you can see to infinity!" views.

A good opportunity to talk to him, learn a little bit more about the tableland.

Rockhampton was the first country Branch to host a Regional Conference, which was held in May 1979, followed by a camp-out excursion to the Blackdown Tableland.
They hosted a second very successful Conference in September 1996, followed again by a camp-out excursion to the Blackdown Tableland.

Reports of falling boulders and extreme fire conditions have forced the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service to close the Blackdown Tableland park in central Queensland, Goomburra Forest Reserve in the Southern Downs district, and Numinbah Forest Reserve near Springbrook in the Gold Coast hinterland.
QPWS ranger Grant Phelan said lack of rain after a recent bushfire had forced the closure of Blackdown Tableland park near Dingo, about 120km southwest of Rockhampton — one of the most popular camping destinations in Queensland.
He said the South Mimosa Creek was dry and other swimming holes were murky and unsuitable for use.
