	DPRP : CONCERT REVIEW ARCHIVE
		Blackfield is a project whose music has taken form over the course of the last few years, with Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) working with Israeli musician Aviv Geffen when time allowed.
		The result of this collaboration is a gem of an album, entitled Blackfield and I was keen to witness the outfit's UK debut, even more so, when it was announced that the band would be supported by Anathema performing an acoustic show and a further short solo set by Steven Wilson himself.
		Songs such as Blackfield, Pain and Cloudy Now, (originally a hit for Aviv, sung in Hebrew) really stood out, but all of the set was well received by the audience even if some sections of the audience were more excited by certain tunes than others were.

		Studio M was very fortunate to speak with both Aviv Geffen and Steven Wilson about the origins and future of Blackfield, and how their working relationship produced one of 2004’s most impressive releases.
		Blackfield was more about Aviv coming up with music and the melody in Hebrew, and then I would write an English set of lyrics.
		The lyrics on Blackfield are more direct and perhaps not as sophisticated as I would normally write, but that is something to do with the discipline of working with Aviv and the Blackfield project - to keep things simple and direct.

		A project that grew out of an invitation from Aviv Geffen, a famous singer songwriter from Israel, to play some gigs with Porcupine Tree in his country in the year 2000.
		He became a friend of Steven Wilson, showed him some of his songs and now they started Blackfield, one of the many Steven Wilson projects.
		A simple but beautiful piano riddle gets “Blackfield” on the way, a song that certainly has a lot of hit potential.

		Steve and Aviv met themselves about five years ago starting together an artistic collaboration: the result is a band called Blackfield and ten short songs composed by both of them.
		I've never listened anything of Aviv's discography, so I can't tell you what kind of contribution he gave to the album sound; on the contrary I'm a huge fan of Porcupine Tree and I must say that most of the songs are clearly filled with PT music style.
		Well, Blackfield is a beautiful "no frills" album, an amusing hors d'oeuvre with poppy sauce, waiting for the new Porcupine Tree release.

		The video of "Blackfield" fits really in the mood of the song and is enchanged as video track, or you can download him at the Blackfield site.
		The track was never progressed any further since it was felt it didn't fit the Blackfield sound (several other songs fell by the wayside for similar reasons).
		A special Blackfield download single will be released on 12th December, featuring 3 different versions of the song "Blackfield".

		Special guests Anathema have already played their set and Blackfield's Steve Wilson is readying himself to take to the stage for an acoustic solo session before playing with his creative other half, Israeli superstar Aviv Geffen.
		From title-track Blackfield, through Glow and Lullaby, they play simple and stirring songs with sometimes a minor-key piano tremble here, a plaintive guitar solo there.
		They play deftly with the songs' skeletons, fleshing them out here and there, teasing the rhythms and harmonies until, when the audience can bear it no more, they unleash a melodic, multi-layered wall of sound that you can feel beneath the ground.

		Over the next two years the two would frequently meet in London or Tel-Aviv and plans for an EP eventually turned into a 10 song album which was released in Israel last February.
		Two songs on the album (Blackfield and Lullaby) were songs written by Wilson which didn't seem quite right for Porcupine Tree but matched the Blackfield style.
		Blackfield is my personal favourite on the album, an extremely catchy and atmospheric song sometimes reminding me of the Stupid Dream album.

		Of course a lot of Porcupine Tree fans were present because Blackfield, in a way, is the continuation of PT, where they left off after their Lightbulb Sun album.
