The Abalone is a nocturnal, herbivorous mollusc which belongs to a primitive group of marine snails of the class Gastropoda, the largest of all gastropods.
Care must be taken during the nucleation process not to cut the abalone because they have no mechanism to coagulate their blood, this means, if an animal sustains a cut it can bleed to death or it may die from the lack of mobility that results when the muscle clamps the wound closed.
The technological developments in abalone pearl acquaculture over the past 8-10 years mean that the industry has now amassed the skills and knowledge necessary to produce a pearl of the highest calibre that is prized for its aesthetic beauty.
