The original cause of the quarrel was a private one between Oxford and Knyvet, a matter of family honour; for Knyvet was the uncle of Anne Vavasour, mother of Oxford's illegitimate son.
The affray at the Blackfriars seems to have been the second incident—there is supposed to have been an earlier one in Lambeth Marsh, but this, as I hope to show, is a myth.
We do not know how long Oxford and his men had been there, but if they were the first to arrive at their destination, the near approach of the enemy, in full force, might well have given cause for alarm, and hasty preparations for action.

Oxford made a gift of it to his secretary and protege, John Lyly along with the unexpired term of Joyner's lease which Oxford had acquired at some unknown date.
After purchasing the Blackfriars in 1596, James Burbage began transforming the Parliament Chamber into a theatre "with great charge and trouble." The lower story beneath the Parliament Chamber which had once been Joyner's school of fence was used for traps.
While it is still possible that the Italians may have taught in Blackfriars in the mid 1580's up until the early part of the 1590's, Shakespeare' company would not have been occupying the Blackfriars Theatre until the beginning of the 17th century.

The common belief is that from seeds sown in the early modern period a weed grew and took hold in the garden of philosophy.
Less exaltedly, in Oxford in the late 1950s and 60s very good philosophers such as Gilbert Ryle and J. Austin deployed broadly Aristotelian categories in connection with important issues in the philosophy of mind and moral psychology.

I was fortunate to be able to study at the Angelicum first for the licence and then the doctorate in canon law.
For many years our priory was a ‘mixed community’, that is, we friars lived a certain amount of common life with lay men and women and shared many of our activities and prayers.
One of the many good things done by the brethren in that priory is the celebration every week of a family Mass which is also the foundation for many types of pastoral involvements with those who attend that Mass; I helped to coordinate the Mass and its activities for a number of years.
