Blackhawk was the creation of Will Eisner, the prolific genius behind characters as diverse as The Spirit and Sheena, Queen of the Jungle.
In keeping with the trend at DC, the Blackhawks began to fight monsters, aliens and other sci-fi menaces, to the point where eventually, their world was indistinguishable from that of the superheroes.
Blackhawk and his cronies have appeared only sporadically in the past couple of decades — a mini-series here, a special there … When they do appear, they follow the lead of the 1982 series, and appear in a World War II setting.

 Freedom Fighters (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Freedom Fighters is the name of a minor DC Comics comic book superhero team made up of characters acquired from the defunct company, Quality Comics, and the short-lived comic book series of the same name featuring those characters.
The Justice Society, Blackhawks and Freedom Fighters were captured by the alien Appellax creatures and placed in concentration camps.
Several members of the modern team were killed by the Society in Infinite Crisis #1, with the exception of Damage, Iron Munro, who was not there for some reason, and the Ray, who was captured by the Psycho-Pirate and told that Luthor wanted him alive.

 The Golden Age Blackhawk
Blackhawk was a member of the Polish resistance (originally he was meant to be Polish, but retcons later made him Polish-American, who had joined the resistance because America was doing nothing about the invasion of his ancestral home), fighting the Nazis with daring night attacks in a plane he had painted fl.
Military Comics became Modern Comics with #44 (November 1945, after the end of the war), but Blackhawk continued to star in the title until it was cancelled in October 1950 with #102.
In 1956 Quality Comics, Blackhawk's original publisher, sold off its characters to National Comics (the future D.C.), with the exception of Blackhawk, which was leased to its new home on a royalty basis (D.C. would eventually purchase the full rights to the character).

Blackhawk was an unnamed Polish aviator whose family was murdered by the Nazis during the invasion of Poland in 1939; he organized a multi-national squadron to fight the fascists in Europe and Asia.
Blackhawk is an entertaining period adventure executed with Chaykin’s customary chutzpah Its rough language and lascivious content was poorly received in 1987, although it’s not that shocking today.
Blackhawk didn’t achieve the success of The Shadow, largely because retailers balked at the sex and violence — many preordered copies ended up in the bargain bin, and the mini was never collected in trade paperback.

Blackhawk was first featured on the cover and as the lead story in Military Comics #1 (August 1941) and remained the series' star through its title change (to Modern Comics, in 1945) and to the end of the series, in 1950.
Blackhawk's story is refreshingly simple: A young aviator, seeking vengeance on his family's killers, dons fl leather aviator's gear and organizes his own personal militia of anonymous assistants to battle the Nazis.
The Blackhawks, like the soldiers who inspired them, were a real combat unit, and this is why the series worked.

Really rather sad, because the "NEW Blackhawk Era" was a total flop and the characters were regressed to their old ways in less than a year.

When I read the Blackhawks comics 35 or so years ago, I always thought it would be great to be on a team like that.
Blackhawk was the third comic series I ever bought on a regular basis (right behind Sgt. Rock and GI Combat) nd still one of my favorites.
Blackhawk was my favorite comic when I was growing up, but my interest lapsed when DC saw fit to make them pseudo-super heroes with funny costumes and augmented powers.

Chaykin started his career in comics as an assistant to Gil Kane.
His best-known works were the comics 'Tiome', 'Blackhawk' and 'Shadow'.
In 1977, prior to the movies, he drew the first 'Star Wars' comics, which were a very big hit.

 Comic creator: Reed Crandall
Almost all of Crandall's output at this time went to the Quality Comics Group which published such titles as Hit Comics, Crack Comics, Smash Comics, Military Comics and Uncle Sam which later became Blackhawk Comics.
Before long Reed was illustrating all of the 'Blackhawk' and 'Dollman' stories, which he continued to draw for almost fifteen years.
In 1960 he landed a contract with Treasure Chest Comics and drew stories for them for twelve years doing stories and covers as often as twice a month.

 News from me - August 26, 2001
He started in comics working for the notorious Victor Fox and while there, worked on the company's main super-hero, The Blue Beetle, which appeared in both comic books and strips signed "by Charles Nicholas." (Cuidera's full name was Charles Nicholas Cuidera) Others, including Jack Kirby, took over the strip, retaining the Nicholas by-line.
In 1970, he was mulling an offer to become involved with city planning in his home town when he got into an argument with a DC editor over corrections to his artwork...an ironic turn of events, given Cuidera's own reputation as an art director.
It was at that point that Chuck Cuidera left comics and focused his energies elsewhere, soon losing all contact with the industry.

Dan Thompson's Unofficial Blackhawk Comics Website has an interesting page on Mexican editions of BLACKHAWK at http://ourworlds.topcities.com/flhawk/i...al/int_mex.html.
Apparently, in the 60s Blackhawk appeared in Mexico in titles from two different publishers simultaneously, under the names “Halcon Negro” and “Halcon de Oro”.
In this period the publisher using the former name published original stories.
